this guy has become the clear cut leader imo, how he plays, how he interacts with media, how he reacts to getting mobbed by fans.

I think this is probably one of the goals of Conroy’s “Dallas Stars’ like” rebuild.
If you can convince a player who is in their prime that they’re only a couple seasons away from being competitive again they’re probably far more likely to stick around to the end of that rebuild. The fact that you can keep these good players on your team means that you’re likely to be far more successful as the first wave of your new core make it to the NHL.
I don’t know how realistic it would be for the Flames to keep a player like Andersson, I am personally expecting him to be traded, but if you have Andersson and Weegar the Flames don’t need that much to go right to have a decent defensive unit. They would obviously need to draft and develop players to replace these two defense men, but they would have years to do that.
