Will the Toronto Maple Leafs try William Nylander at centre again when training camp opens?



Like most NHL teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs will have some questions that will need to be answered when training camp opens. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti start looking ahead by wondering who will be playing centre outside of Auston Matthews and John Tavares in camp. They move on to see if we could see the team make another attempt at trying William Nylander down the middle. They move on to looking at what other new Leafs signings had to say at the team’s golf tournament, more specifically, Chris Tanev, Anthony Stolarz and more.

    Why no one talks about making Marner at centre is a complete mystery to me? He is an obvious playmaker (give him open ice), not a wall guy. Put his contract money down the middle, change the narrative around him. Open up the wings to Domi and Cowan. Build the strength down centre. Matthews, Marner, Tavares. He's way more defensively responsible than Nylander. He has always been miscast as a winger. He even played some centre in junior.

    For a moment, you had me thinking you finally bring up Marner, but no, you just regurgitating the same old narratives of every other channel, media. Nylander, really? Come on guys show some originality.

    All the reasons you are giving for Nylander at centre are the same reasons to use Marner there, except there are many more reasons why to put Marner there instead.

    Nylander at center. Sigh. The real question is will Berube hold him accountable every shift. Not Sheldon's 1000 chances, but real accountability. "Willie, you just let your man go. You rest on the bench for 10 minutes." Every single time. If not, it will fail because Nylander will never defend on his own. It is pretty fair to say at this point that the criticism about his dad applies to him as well. It has been said of Michael Nylander that he never cared about winning. He cared about his goals, his points and his money. Apple next to tree. It would be better to try Domi and Marner together with Domi at C. Play another defensively responsible winger with them

    Wingers with Nylander. It is going to have to be players that are really defensively responsible. When Babcock, yea I know he is a terrible person, but he understood hockey, played Nylander at center, he gave him Marner and Hyman as he wingers. The two best two way wingers on the team at that time. They need Marner to take the tough matchups so it can't be him, maybe Jarnkrok, and Knies or McMann. Robertson is the second worst defensive forward after Nylander and Domi is third. Neither can ever be on the ice at the same time as Nylander. Okay, that handshake line is alright, and the warmup, but definitely not during a game.
