Rogers buying the rest of the Maple Leafs!

So now the main NHL rights holder (Sportsnet) will (almost) fully own one of the teams they cover. Its one thing when TSN and SN both own a chunk. This has to have an affect on the next rights contract doesnt it?

Wouldn’t that be a conflict of interest for negociating TV rights in Canada?

Edit: Thanks for the answers guys

I guess to add to the Blue Jays which they already owned. If they want trophies from their purchases, they may need to keep buying tho…

The other 31 NHL teams will insist that the national rights package goes to the highest bidder. As they each get a cut of the rights fees. Sure, if its a tie, then Rogers will win out.

The NHLPA will insist that if rogers sells the local rights package to themselves, they do it for fair market value so the HHR is on the salary cap.

You also have the other 25% owners who will want fair market value for local tv rights.

We have to remember that Comcast is involved in Flyers ownership too and that didnt effect the last espn/tnt deal.
