It’s almost September and Dawson Mercer still doesn’t have a new contract lined up. It’s been reported that he and the front office aren’t “close” on a new deal. However, talks are still ongoing. A lot of people are growing impatient and rightfully so. But given Mercer’s current RFA circumstance, there are a few bright spots. I don’t get it: if the team made him a Qualifying Offer, then why/when can other teams send an Offer Sheet?

Dawson Mercer should be grateful he is being offered a contract at all. He was absolutely abysmal last season. He's a 3rd line talent. Nothing special about him. I could careless if they trade him.
Perhaps the Devils could trade Dawson Mercer along with Ondrej Palat, Erik Haula, Dawson Mercer, and a 2026 1st-rounder to the Senators for Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, and a 2025 7th-rounder.
