His former agent Ben Hankinson was on The Sota Pod which covers the Wild and was asked about the whereabouts of big number 33 who walked away from hockey and never really looked back:
“he told me when he signed his five-year deal that ‘I don’t want a five-year deal’. Of course he’s just saying that to me. Sure enough he quit with two years left on the deal…..”.
After joking that his kids wouldn’t be able to go to private school he continued
“…..he walked away. He said ‘I told you I didn’t want a five-year deal’. It wasn’t the money at all. All he had to do was basically go, get some rehab and attempt to come back. It was a hockey injury. He just left it on the table and walked which is insane. The more you know him the more you love him. He’s the best.”

I hope to see this man’s jersey in the rafters sooner rather than later.

The most heartbreaking thing about it is that we the fans never got to say goodbye. Boy, what a sendoff into retirement that would have been for him.

Arber Xhekaj is the biggest contender in the league who could fill those skates like #33 used to. The Jets could use someone with his presence on the team again.

Would’ve been way better for all parties to have signed the length of contract that Buff wanted. The organization could have planned for the end of his career and likely not had the following years of a poor defence. Would have likely re-signed one of chiarot or myers during that period. The fans would have had a send off for buff. And Buff would’ve got what he wanted all along. I personally blame the agent for the whole situation as it was a case of him wanting to make as much money as possible on Buffs contract.
