The Dallas Stars sign Defensemen Esa Lindell to a 5 year extension at a $5.25M Cap Hit

The Dallas Stars have signed 30 year old defenseman Esa Lindell to a 5 year $5.25M Cap hit extension this afternoon. Joey breaks down the contract details, shares hit thoughts and opinions and more on the extension on today’s episode of Locked On Stars. Lindell was entering the final year of a six year deal at $5.8M per year, so why did the Stars go ahead and get an extension done a year early? How does this affect players such as Mavrik Bourque, Wyatt Johnston, and Logan Stankoven who need deals after this season. After that, Joey discusses why he’s starting to buy in to the Dallas Stars being better now than they were day one of last season. Plus, he shares some Q and A answers from General Manager Jim Nill and Mike Heika. In the final segment, Joey asks what are you most looking forward too next season with the Dallas Stars?

  1. Lindell extension doesnโ€™t make sense to me. Older and not top 4 d anymore. With miro Harley and Bischel on the left, we donโ€™t need him. Plus you still have to resign Harley, Johnston, stankoven, otter and robo again. Just doesnโ€™t seem rightโ€ฆ..

  2. I would have liked the deal if it was at 3.5 or so. Heโ€™s a serviceable defender as of late. Heโ€™s just not an over 5 mil player anymore. Just like some of the deals Nills made in free agency this is a head scratcher. But in Nill o believe

  3. I wonder if he has a no trade clause? Or does he? Itโ€™s a contract someone would pick up if he was being traded. IMO. Thereโ€™s a team that wants Lindell for 5mil. If someone shines or if he falters in a year or two. We have good young hungry talent coming up, so this D will look different going forward.
But I get your point of saving the 5 mil, and not signing him yet and waiting the year out.

  4. With Harley signed now at a mere 4m (he will be waaaayyy more expensive in 2 years), and having 2m left at the BEGINNING of the year, we can get some serious juiciness later at the trade deadline, or be perfectly fine pulling someone up from the AHL and not worry about sending them back down on waivers

  5. Lindell could get 6 to 6.5million on the open market. Got him to take a paycut to stay. Consider we couldn't snatch any big FA defensemen this year. Better to not hope we get an improvement over Lindell next off-season, and miss out on Lindell too.

  6. Most looking forward to bounce back seasons from the Core 4 – Robertson, Hintz, Heiskanen, Oettinger. Of they can have stronger years of their career, and I think they will, then the team is golden.
