[Alter] Knies, final year of ELC, if he’s talked extension with Leafs: I don’t really want to get into that. I want to stay here. I know a lot of guys want to stay here. It’s a pretty awesome place to play. I think I’m just going to leave that out of my hands and just work on getting better.

It’s a little unfortunate that he ended up playing exactly 10 games between regular season and playoffs in his first year – had he played more, it likely means the team went further than game 5 and/or he didn’t get hurt; had he played fewer than 10 games, an offer sheet would not be a possibility.

Either way, get it done with a long term contract, Knies is the real deal

At least we control him for a few more years though. Maybe get a bridge deal and see how grows

Tom Wilson got 6.5% of the cap on his first extension. Point rates were similar.

At the projected cap hit of 92M in 2025-2026, that is 5.98M.

Account for Leafs tax, that would be 6M+ for a long term deal.

I think that’s the low bar for their camp. If he has a breakout season, it’s easily more.

Do you guys think he would be a guy that would be targeted by an offer sheet if we can’t afford him

Why do they even have to ask a pending RFA this question? Heā€™s playing on the top line with Matthews and Marner and he grew up idolizing Matthews. Just seems like heā€™s highly highly likely to stay

If anything ask the management why they didnā€™t sign him to a longer term lower cost extension over the summer

That’s it Matthew. Focus on playing and the contract will follow.

I really think they should be looking to sign him to term before this year starts.

He’s looked really good and it’s only a matter of time before that starts showing consistently in the box-score and then his ask would also rise considerably.

With that said: Dawson Mercer just signed a 4M x 3 years contract. Mercer is a year older (basically where Knies would be next year) but has a higher P/GP and G/GP. To me that sets the table for Knies if you’re signing him today: it would be hard for him to argue he deserves more over his current play but if he thinks he’s a better player then he might not want to sign to something similar now pegging him at this level.

I think for me, as I’m a believer in him, I’d say ~$5M x 6 years would be a good deal for both sides.

Then prove that you belong here. I like Knies and he seems to get better and better every year, and with his size and skill heā€™s built for the playoffs. It simply if you wanna see some of your friends stay you all have to win, simple as that

I hope if they do end up keeping Marner/Tavares that they do end up being able to keep Knies and potentially Cowan if he pans out long term. Tired of seeing great leafs prospects go and have success on other teams when our team is in the same place for 8 yearsā€¦

Give Knies 5×5.5 and sign his extension before the season starts. Low risk, high reward.
