Yes, we’ve got a few players due for raises, the roster will look significantly different next season.
Murky_Picture_775
Yes. I actually think if they don’t get it done this year they will trade Panarin too. It will clear cap for shesty and they can get a really good return.
BSN41
Yes. Cap crunch forces you into moving on from players you may not want too. Plus, if they can’t move the needle forward it’s insanity to keep running it back.

Yes for sure

I don’t have any inside track here but isn’t this idea completely plausible / supportable given how most NHL teams have operated in the last 25-30 years and some very basic research into the context of the Rangers current situation…? Factors like the ages of key members of the core (20/10/93/16 all 30+ yrs old)….some contracts that are limiting the rangers ability to improve the roster… and also who else of importance is going to become Free Agents at the end of this season & need new contracts? This shouldn’t be remotely surprising, or news.
The-Pigeon-Man
We’ve all known this.
Necdurgogan75
He’s right, for the whole team. Their cap situation is not going to look pretty going forward. If they don’t do it this year we aren’t seeing the Cup for a while
hellohiheyhowdyhello
Especially if you include Sam Rosen in that core group
TernoftheArctic
I mean we gotta pay Laf and Shesty. Followed by miller and others. Trouba will for sure be gone. And might lose others too
niebs59
Bread Kreids Mika all not getting younger. We are approaching now or never territory for them
RicharlisonsLeftNut
Yes. If we do not even make the cup heads have to roll.
beepmeepwop
I’ve lost faith thought that last year was the year to do it they just getting older I’m sorry it’s not happening
JerseyKlahn
Yes, win or lose this is the last shot, due to the oncoming salary cap freight train that is Shesty’s next ticket.
Efficient_Lake8523
This is Trouba’s last season if they win the whole thing
NicholasDeOrio
Next year our goalie’s contract will eat any potential move we can make at the deadline. Trouba really needed to be off this roster already to make any serious run.
Competitive_You_9918
Well if you think they’re going to lock in Igor, Laf, Miller, Fox (already in), free up Trouba cap space and so on just to rebuild after this year, you’re just incorrect.
flowstuff
wether or not it’s true it’s an odd statement from your captain to start the season. maybe he feels this will motivate them?
Shiny_Mew76
I’m not going to deny that changes are coming next season, but I don’t think it’s our “last chance”.
Look, Trouba is gone no matter what. We need to get Laf and Igor signed to extensions, we can do that. I’m hoping we can get Laf at 7M/8M, and Igor at 10.5M.
We’ve got good prospects in the system, particularly Othaman and Perrault.
A retool I wouldn’t put out of the question. I imagine Kakko is gone within the next couple seasons.
We still have an excellent Top 6 FWD group, and an excellent Top 4 D. The most we will need is one more Top 6 FWD (Which Perrault could very well fill), and a Top 4 D to replace Trouba. It’s not like Free Agency won’t be there, I’m not sure who will be available, but as long as we don’t sign any bad contracts I’m sure we could get something.
And even then, if all else fails, we’ve still got a good group of players capable of winning games, and the best goalie in the league who on his own could carry us very far.
For this core, particularly Trouba? Yeah it might be their last chance, but if we don’t get it this coming season, I think we’ve still got a pretty good chance in the next.
I’m not even that worried about Zib. He’s getting older, and needs to step it up in the playoffs. Yet he’s still a star player for us. Same with Breadman.
ImpossibleBandicoot
I don’t buy it. I mean Trouba will likely be gone so from his perspective it’s the last crack with this core.
There will be more changes next offseason than we had this offseason (which were practically none, from an NHL perspective) but it’s not going to be like a firesale or anything, regardless of what happens.
Still under contract for the following season – Panarin, Mika, Kreider, Trochek. Laf will be re-signed. So that’s 5 of your top 6 that will almost definitely return. I also don’t see any of them getting traded/moved – Mika and Bread are very expensive and that limits the market, plus they have full NMC. Kreider and Troch both have NTC and honestly are deals. Laf isn’t going anywhere obviously.
Fox has a NMC. Schneider is on a bridge deal and is good value for a young D. Miller will be re-signed. Trouba will likely be gone. Lindgren is probably going UFA. So that’s half your defense returning.
Igor will get signed. Backup goalie will be up for grabs.
But still I’ve listed basically all our core players above
