Toronto Maple Leafs get first pre-season win, examining tough competition for bottom six jobs

The Toronto Maple Leafs got their first victory of the pre-season, but did we get a clearer idea of which forwards are making a case for a job in the bottom six? Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti give their thoughts on the Leafs’ 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens, which had some concerning moments with William Nylander leaving the game and John Tavares limited after a hit. With the victory, Mike and Dave get to hand out their Three Stars of the Game, highlighting strong performances for Nick Robertson, a pair of veteran defencemen and Easton Cowan. Mike and Dave end the show by discussing the tough decisions the Leafs coaching staff have to make, with a lot of forwards vying for jobs in the bottom six and only so many positions up for grabs.

  1. This was a Robertson game in a nutshell. He has a lethal shot but lacks hockey IQ. He wants to make a name, and get a raise, which means he's too trigger happy and not team oriented. He plays like he's on an island by himself. Berube needs to coach that out of him if they decide to keep him.

  2. I thought Berube was going to hold players accountable. I would have thought Robertson would sit the whole game.

  3. Kypreos going off on Robertson is pathetic. It was an incredibly unlucky play. Sure it was a lazy move but no one would mention it if Willy stays on his feet

  4. Robertson's mistake was assuming the player in front of him was intent on backchecking hard and would benefit from a boost. If he would have hesitated long enough to view Nylander's number he would have known that impossible.

  5. Cowan couldn’t get through defensemen in practice and got easily knocked off the puck by AHLers himself. It’s been reported that Pacioretty and Lorentz basically have deals in place to join the team. Cowan isn’t ready or making the team. He’d get eaten up by the Panthers and Bruins. But y’all keep weaving fantasies because that’s what you’re being sold.

  6. They don't really need cowan this year. Let him dominate another ohl season and win the mem cup. Pushing is elc another year is also very valuable to Toronto

  7. It is nearly impossible to trade a player at this time of the year. You need to put them on waivers.

  8. I've seen leaf player's and others do that exact same play to boost their teammates in the past and I always thought it was a good play. It might have been Reilly I believe done it in the Tampa series and it worked.
Willie falling and getting hurt is just unfortunate that's all.
