This is actually a fascinating conversation. Let me start by saying that regardless of any comparisons to hockey, Shohei Is putting up one of the all-time great seasons in the history of the sport. What makes it most impressive is that steals and homeruns are almost opposing skillsets. The big power hitters are usually to large and immobile to be base sealers while the really fast runners rarely have the type of strength to put up big HR numbers.
I have no idea why anybody thought 100 goals and 100 assists would be the equivalent. It would obviously be more modest totals, but whatever they are, Wayne Gretzky has done it multiple times. Mario's 85-114-199 would certainly qualify as well. Perhaps Phil Esposito earns consideration with a season that often gets overlooked these days, but he went off for 76-76-152 one year.
It's more closer 60 + 60. Considering how many have had 50 home runs and 50 steals.
A player scoring 100 goals plus 100 assists in the same season is NOT doable in the NHL. 😮 Not now, and not ever!!!!

It looks like McDavid’s best was 64 goals and 89 assists. The previous record holder for goals before Gretzky in a season I believe was Esposito at 76 goals approx. I think 70 goals and 70 assists would already be impressive for McDavid.
