  1. I don't understand why Hakstol wanted a static power play. The entire purpose of the power play is to shift the defense out of position by baiting them. You can't do that if your skates are tied to one spot on the ice. Power plays are dynamic and require player creativity. Hell, half of the fun is using innate skill to take advantage of an opportunity. Hockey is ordered chaos.

It sounds like Hakstol sucked the fun out of playing the game. It's one thing to provide systems, optimal positions, routes, and plays, and another to stifle playmaking entirely – especially when it comes to special teams. I wonder if this is why some players chafed under his leadership? If you take a creative mind and force it to play junior hockey basics then you're going to get junior hockey results. Systems and skill are a delicate balancing act.

I've played under enough coaches to know that a bad one can suck the enthusiasm, energy, and chemistry right out of the locker room. Kraken players are professionals and I'm sure they can take their lumps like every other NHL player. However, being restricted to certain mechanics for long periods of time is exhausting and stifles development.

It's too early to speak on Bylsma’s effect on the team's performance, but I can't help feeling more optimistic about the team's future. I hope they feel a bit more freedom to play the game unfolding in front of them rather than the one on the white board. They didn't get to this level by being lucky. Trust is a two-way street and I want more two-way hockey.

  2. Love when Zaiem is on the show. I’ve agreed with pretty much everything he’s had to say so far.
