Boudreau weighs in – Will Ovechkin pass Gretzky this year? | Domino’s That’s Hockey

Two seasons ago, Alex Ovechkin had 42 goals and he needs exactly that many this season to pass Wayne Gretzky and become the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer. Will he do it this year? Would it be more special if he could manage to break the mark with an emphatic season as opposed to limping to the record over the next few seasons? TSN Hockey analyst Bruce Boudreau and TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button discuss.

  1. I just can't see it happening this season. Especially given the more injury prone state of his final years. Ovi hasn't missed many games admittedly, but a lot more than he did before turning 35. A 42 goal pace on a defensive Washington team, and him being another tick slower, just doesn't seem likely. The one possibility is a red hot power play which he'll get every chance to score on, and every single empty net goal (of which he recently passed Gretzky for most all time I think). It's possible, just not likely.

  2. It looked like he was slowing down quite a bit in the first half of last season. Then he caught fire in the 2nd half. It could happen.

  3. It's so strange to see a team more concerned about "getting Ovie the record", rather than winning. In 61 more games this season, he will have played as many regular season games as Gretzky.

  4. Do not ever put that overpaid slug Russian's name in the same paragraph as Wayne Gretzky's.
