Jesse Puljujarvi earns a spot on the Penguins opening night roster

If there was one standout this preseason it was Jesse Puljujuarvi and he made a statement to end training camp! Patrick and Hunter are back to close out the preseason talking about the Penguins’ back-to-back victories over the Columbus Blue Jackets. They discuss a great preseason for Puljujarvi and how he has, in their eyes, solidified a spot on the opening night roster, what to do with Rutger McGroarty, and if Ryan Graves might be a lost cause at this point. Finally, they wrap up the show talking about the biggest question coming out of camp – should Harrison Brunicke make the team and get a nine-game tryout?

  1. Pens looked good in that game. Columbus is not good though. Puljujarvi has been phenomenal this preseason. Maybe he's finally starting to catch on and we see the player that got picked #4 in his draft year. Glass made the defensive play of the night when he stole the puck on a backcheck and started the sequence on rakell's goal. I think he deserve's a roster spot along will puljujarvi and puustinen. Mcgroarty looked really good tonight but think he will be sent down to avoid the chance of losing puustinen to waivers

  2. After that game they just had I think Sullivan has got to keep the McGroarty-Eller-Puljujarvi line together, for now at least. I can't remember the last time I watched a line click the way they did tonight, it was fun to watch. And how about Acciari too, I still think he was miscast as a center last season, he's always been way better at right wing and it showed this preseason.

  3. I have a feeling that Graves will be moved before the Pens finish the first 20 games. There are so many young defensemen in the system that would be better in that position. Honestly, I'd be surprised if Pettersson isn't moved, too. Maybe even paired in the deal with Graves. Personally, though, if/when they move Pettersson, he deserves to go to a Cup contender.

  4. Hmmm yeah idk. I think he HAS looked great all preseason. He's consistently been been one of the best players analytically in 5/6 games he's started this preseason. Also keep in mind that he has played majority of the preseason games and that was a lot of hockey crammed into a small period of time. They schedule won't be like that through the season. He'll be fresher for a lot of games rather than having to participate in camp, heavy practices, and playing in 5 games in 7 days. If he's not up to speed but can still positively affect the play on the ice, I don't see why it really matters. He can work on his skating in the NHL the same he would be in the AHL.

If Crosby/Malkin had 5-6 years left, I'd say yeah throw him in the american league for a season to cook or until injuries arise. But now? Time is ticking to absorb as much as possible from both of these guys. Give him the opportunity. He's shown that he can shine in the big moments.

  5. Jesse Puljujarvi should be on the top line with Sid and Rust (at least to start the season) as he's been a complete animal. But I'd be equally excited if RM, Eller and Jesse form our third line. Although, worried about losing Pusti.

  6. nice seeing people scoring other than 87 and 71 hopefully it carries through all season hopefully no one claims ludvig or gruden on waivers

  7. i agree Brunicke looks great, merely from a headroom perspective though and that the fact that he doesn't have to clear waivers, i'll be surprised if he starts the season on the NHL roster. just too many tough decisions will force mgmt's hand here. i don't think anyone will be upset, squad looks good so far on paper and on the ice!

  8. I am really excited about Jesse Puljujarvi. He absolutely looks himself again. He's had an entire offseason to properly train, he looks great, he's skating better, and I am really excited to see what he brings. 100 percent he's made this team. That line of Puljujarvi-McGroarty-Eller was terrific last night.

  9. Didn't Poulan have an arrest for Public Drunkness a few years ago in WBS ? Maybe I'm thinking of somebody else ?

  10. Hi guys!! 100% Jesse is on the team, you're correct!! He is a completely different player from last year. His physical ability has improved, his skating, his checking, and probably most importantly his confidence has skyrocketed!!! That goal on the breakaway was a guy who is on his game.
On another note, do you guys ever travel to other games? I've only been watching you since the end of last year when I stumbled upon your podcast and LOVE it guys, thank you so much. I live in Langley City, BC Canada 🇨🇦 and have tickets for the Pens & Canucks Oct 26th would love to buy you both a beer to say thanks. You guys have given me lots of info throughout the off-season which I don't receive being in Vancouver. If you do come to Van, please let me know, Victor Kopp btw tix are sec 101 row 4 so I get Sid & the guys shooting for two periods
