Huh??? This would mean a trade is already agreed for Grubauer. Conspiracy theory me says this would explain why Grubauer did not both getting new gear in the offseason in Kraken colors.

Daccord looks like a goalie worth this money if he can take the game more seriously and mature in the ways he plays the puck.

Friedman tweet about it for original source.

Ron Francis has shown that he is not a shrewd negotiator, but hopefully this one will age well at least.

  2. Marxbrosburner

Everyone said the Grubauer contract has been a big ol’ albatross around the team’s neck, but this one is just as expensive, no?

  3. Artistic_Age8693

What the hell are we doing Ron šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø heā€™s played one season! One!!!! I love Joey as much as the next guy but this is the type of move that gets you fired if it doesnā€™t pan out

  4. Olbaidon

Definitely looks like this will be Gruā€™s last year with us. Makes sense, I genuinely hope it works out and Joey steps up to be the man we need. He definitely showed last year that he **can** be that guy, but he has also shown (not just last year but through his entire hockey career) that he can be inconsistent as well.

As much as I love Gru and Joey, and have shown that love in abundance, for the teams benefit I would hate to essentially pay Joey the same as Gru and be in the same spot when it comes to goaltending performance.

This is essentially the Gru contract all over again, similar pay and ends right around the same age as Gruā€™s was slated to end.

The big difference is track record I suppose. Gru had nearly a decade of NHL experience, playoff experience, played with a cup winning team, was a Vezina nominee, all by Joeyā€™s age. While Joey has yet to really string together multiple .900+ seasons throughout his entire career and has just us as NHL experience.

Excited for the next chapter with Joey and hope it is a turning point for the Kraken!

  5. surfingeagles

Woah!!! It’s a few million less than the other goalies getting paid but 5 years is a long time. Just hope he cleans up his act of turning the puck over behind the net.

  6. AtYourServais

This is yet another deal that is ratcheting up my fears that we are going to be the Wild 2.0

  7. juanthebaker

Uhh… This seems like the deal you sign at the end of the year if he performs pretty well again. Lots of risk in this move. Let’s hope he keeps it rolling!

  8. ReturnOk9335

Canā€™t wait to see him start, itā€™s clear heā€™s improved his game and his ready to be our starting goal tender

  9. BlackhawkBolly

There are far greater problems about the team construction than this contract, so whatever hope it works out

  10. gnahckire

I’d love to see Daccord and Dreiger back as our tandem.

    Wonder when that’ll happen šŸ¤”

  11. seataccrunch

Ron Francis has made huge long term bets and there are serious questions on most of them, though i do like thhs Daccord choice. If this fails Ron’s put the franchise in a bad spot long after he’d be gone.

Matty big money with questions on offensive production

7 year deals for Montour and Stephenson

Burakovsky aka Mr glass aka not sure he cares

    Grus 5 year deal šŸ¤¢

  12. tonytanti

Thatā€™s next yearā€™s expected cap jump. They will have like $10m for the bottom pair, 4th line, and any extras. Doable, but tight, depending on how big a raise Evans and Kartye get.

  13. OK YOU WORRY WARTS, LISTEN UP!

    # DACCORD WILL LEAD US TO THE CUP!

Maybe not this year but Iā€™m choosing to believe this is a start down that path. Letā€™s get some good vibes going gang. Weā€™re one game in with new coaching, a new system, and new roster. The world is our oyster.

    ![gif](giphy|DEZA7FlHbMesUF1jm9)

    CONGRATS JOEY!

  14. lurkerino95

No, he doesnā€™t have the history Gru does but Iā€™m glad weā€™re putting faith in him. He showed up and showed out last year, I think a lot of our success was bolstered by him in net.

Heā€™s got tons of drive and personality and am really pleased weā€™ve got 5 more years.

  15. c0y0t3_sly

The more time this office has, the less I trust it.

  16. toodlelux

Looking forward to a few seasons from now, the war between the Daccord truthers and Kokko stans in game threads.

  17. Shot-Abroad2718

People saying this is going to age badly, but I disagree. I think if Joey was given a solid chance to prove himself, he’ll show up. Gru had one good pre-season game and everyone fell back on his bandwagon. I think this contract is showing that Gru is on the out. Put Joey in as starter and let him cook.

  18. sirkulation

Wonder if this is why he didnā€™t get the start last night. Seemed strange to give it to Gru at the time. Iā€™m happy with the deal, was a little worried about him being a UFA at the end of the year.

  19. SiccSemperTyrannis

This contract is hard to judge today. Its success or failure will depend on whether the level of play Daccord showed last season is a flash-in-the-pan outlier (which is unfortunately common for NHL goalies) or the new normal for him.

If the former, this contract will be a disaster. If the latter, it could end up being great and bring stability to a position that’s been a factor in the Kraken’s struggles since year 1.

I don’t really understand the need to sign this deal now instead of signing it mid-season once you have data showing Daccord is performing consistent with last season. I also don’t feel that the Kraken got any kind of AAV or contract length hometown discount. You can’t expect that with every contract, but this is a worrying trend with the recent contracts Francis has signed. Put simply, I think a lot of them have been a bit too much AAV and a bit too much term for each player.

I think this makes a Grubauer buyout next summer quite likely, especially if Daccord plays well and shows he can be the future starter. [A Grubauer buyout next summer would be 4 years](https://puckpedia.com/player/philipp-grubauer/buyout?s=2025-2026) and the cap hit each season is

    1. ~$2M
    2. ~$3.1M
    3. ~$1.7M
    4. ~$1.7M

This contract and Grubauer’s record here also makes me wish even more the Kraken had targeted Linus Ullmark back during the expansion draft. He’s one of the goalies I wanted all along when we were discussing the expansion draft and building out the year 1 roster. He has been consistently good in Boston since signing there as a free agent and just signed a $8.25M x 4 year extension in Ottawa after getting traded this summer. Ottawa really did not pay a big price in that trade, and I wish the Kraken had found a way to do that trade instead.

Taking a step back, I worry that the [team’s stated approach](https://www.reddit.com/r/SeattleKraken/comments/1fz5lgo/fall_2024_letter_from_kraken_owner_samantha/) of being “committed to the present-day team and delivering to our fans right now” is focused too much on short term business objectives (keep the building full and fans interested, especially if the Sonics return) and not enough on building a roster than can consistently and credibly compete for the Stanley Cup. I talked extensively about this after the Stephenson signing. These big contracts are not a problem today, but they very well could be a problem 3+ years in the future when guys like Beniers, Wright, and Catton should be in their primes and we should be fully in our competitive window.

The worst case scenario is that the Kraken turn into the Minnesota Wild – a team that consistently finishes just inside or outside of the playoffs and reliably gets bounced in the 1st and sometimes 2nd round of the playoffs when they get in. That’s the “mushy middle” of the NHL and that is sports purgatory. Never good enough to win a championship, never bad enough to draft the elite players Cup champions are built around.

I hope that does not happen and my concerns are unfounded. The Kraken have a good foundation with Beniers, Wright, and Catton to build around. But they’ve got to spend their money around those core players efficiently and I am worried they are not doing so.

  20. First-Radish727

Daccord has nothing like a record to justify that level of commitment! He got on a heater last season!

  21. figure32

You love to see it! Super excited about this deal

  22. Jose9319

Waiting on u/futuregoalie to form my opinion

  23. DrShucklePhD

Well… that’s brave. I love the guy, and of course, I’m hoping it pans out, but this is a huge risk. I do, begrudgingly, get that this is part of the Grubauer phase out, and I know it’s necessary, but this may bite us in the ass if he doesn’t glow up.

  24. ghostxvoices

All Iā€™m getting from this is that the Kraken are very interested in a Grubauer buyout if he canā€™t get it together.

  25. Pete_Iredale

Welp, time to double down on trying to get/create a Joey Daccord throwback from last year. Does anyone know if you can buy a different one and get it modified at the team store?

  26. futuregoalie

Idk if it was this thread I got tagged in or not but: when I saw this on my phone I literally launched out of bed.

I am honestly more shocked than anything else. I thought we learned our lesson with Grubauer to be honest, this is a huge contract. To be clear: Darcy Kuemper got this amount of money and term after winning the Stanley Cup and after many years putting up decent numbers on a trash team dragging down his stats. To give this to a goalie with only one year of NHL experience, no matter how stellar (I personally think it was a little up and down) is wild. Driedger had better numbers and we gave him 3×3, ish, for context. I can’t help but wonder where the hell we’re going to get the money for this. I know the cap is going up but by how much. $11m for goaltending is even more than we were paying after signing two starters in the inaugural season.

So I take back what I said in the other thread about this being a prove it year for Joey šŸ˜‚

Anyway time will tell if this was the right decision or not, I do like him, I think he’s a good goalie, but wow, I was not prepared to wake up to this šŸ˜‚ I like the goalie. I’m uneasy about the contract. But we’ll see how it goes

  27. DeadMediaRecordings

This certainly increases the odds of Gru being bought out next off season depending on how this season goes of course.

  28. infidelappel

Bit of a gamble and I have to believe this means they move Gru this summer, but hey hope it works out.Ā

  29. I feel like Joey had a Jerry Maguire moment here.

  30. What the fuck is Francis doing, like

    Wtf

Free agent overpays are unfortunate enough but this is ridiculous, a goalie with not even a 70g sample size

I genuinely can’t remember a more hasty and over eager over pay than this, it’s like buying 100$ worth of lottery tickets when you get your first paycheck

What is going on with him

  31. Daccord and Korpisalo have almost identical starts to their careers fwiw, my point is it way, way too early naturally

  32. Daccord ranked 31st in GSAA per 60 last season, between montembeault and blackwood, roughly middle of the league

    Positive rookie season

But 2×2 bridge deal performance, naturally

  33. Almost 11M$ for aging grubauer and daccord until 2027 šŸ˜
