Clearly smith is the best batsman in all conditions but root is definitely the second best.
Sachin batted in a flat pitch era where average scores were higher and many matches ended in draws. So he's out of contention anyway
Mad that a player like Joe Root still doesn't have a test 100 in Australia 🤯🤯🤯
He'll finish with an average of above 50 which is a good benchmark for calling someone "great" but unless he improves against Oz he's just borderline. For England that puts him definitely below Hobbs, Hammond, Hutton, Sutcliffe and Barrington and, without a good showing next Ashes in Oz, below Compton. All things considered (including County) at this point I would rate fellow Yorkshireman Boycott higher. But better than Cook, Gooch, Gower. Cowdrey, Dexter, Graveney, who were all very good, but maybe not May.
