  1. Smith average in ( South africa India England Newzealand) :51
Roots average in ( south africa england India newzealand) :44
Kohlis average in ( south africa Australia eng newzealand) : 43
Williamson average in ( south africa Australia India England) : 27.

Clearly smith is the best batsman in all conditions but root is definitely the second best.
Sachin batted in a flat pitch era where average scores were higher and many matches ended in draws. So he's out of contention anyway

  2. He'll finish with an average of above 50 which is a good benchmark for calling someone "great" but unless he improves against Oz he's just borderline. For England that puts him definitely below Hobbs, Hammond, Hutton, Sutcliffe and Barrington and, without a good showing next Ashes in Oz, below Compton. All things considered (including County) at this point I would rate fellow Yorkshireman Boycott higher. But better than Cook, Gooch, Gower. Cowdrey, Dexter, Graveney, who were all very good, but maybe not May.
