Should have hired Quenneville instead of this goof.

  2. goleafsgo13

    Missed most of the game.

Any drop passes on the PP?

  3. What I would give to not see Rielly on the top unit.

  4. keeeeener

I completely agree. One, I think they’re trying to include Tavares and Reilly too much. Two, once Nylander/Marner/Matthews gets the puck with any semblance of space they should be instantly looking to weasel their way into the slot for a shot. If you watch McDavid, dude gets the puck and is completely happy to do it all himself. And that ends up opening up so much space for other guys, and those passes end up being so obvious when you’re aggressive yourself.

He’s spot on. Hopefully the players get directed here and they follow.

This is music to my fucking ears

The back pass breakout rarely works.
I’d love to know why they refuse to just use someone on the point that can actually shoot high percentage slap shots.
A d man with a bomb of a shot shouldn’t be so hard to find I thought oel was good at it?

  8. AgentAdja

Too cute sums up their playmaking the last five seasons.

  9. This has been the PP’s problem for a long time. I still think Rielly is a big part of that problem. He doesn’t shoot enough and when he gets the puck he tends to just pass the puck to the guy next to him and it’s rarely a more aggressive slap pass to stretch the PK out of their set box. Too much stationary play that doesn’t create shooting lanes. We still end up with a good PP over the course of the season because Matthews/Nylander have ridiculously good shots and Tavares and Marner are able to score well too but we don’t make it hard enough on the defenders.

The skate to centre ice and then drop pass back to the defensive zone stuff didn’t happen last night and that was good.

I felt that way about more than just the PP, in the opening game. Hoping they come out pushing hard tonight.

After the massive disappointment of game 7, we get a massive disappointing first game of the season. Leafs hockey is back !!

  12. Turbo_911

    “Too cute.”

*Deep breath* ahh yes, there it is. Finally someone said it.

  13. LostBeneathMySkin

A lot of us have been saying that for years and years

  14. UtheDestroyer

Finally a coach that’s just straight up, no bullshit. Refreshing

  15. Nylanderthals

Pretty Keefe has said similar things, hopefully Berube can actually get them to fucking listen.

  16. Blues fans haveseen this movie before. Too many “cute” passes that make the power play look like a passing clinic more than a team trying to score with a man-advantage.

  17. Nameless908

That PP was anything but cute. It was atrocious. I’ve never seen them just throw the puck away so carelessly in years. Craig gunna have to learn this teams not a bunch of Neanderthals they can actually make plays

  18. leafyboy56

Can we just post the answer so we don’t have to go onto twitter?

  19. CMDRShepardN7

If you want less passing and more shooting, don’t stack the 1st unit.

  20. CoolBeansMan9

    Translation:

“I don’t *want* to say it’s too cute, but yeah it’s too cute”

  21. LtColumbo93

This but at the same time whenever Rielly fires the puck directly into a PKers shin pads I die a little bit inside.

Shoot more for sure but GOOD shots please.

  22. dingleberry51

He’s 100% right. I was messaging my buddy saying we’re on the perimeter way too much. Funny enough, that’s what also kills us in the playoffs. Thankfully coach is seeing it early and hopefully he gets them to adjust

  23. Barilko-Landing

I would have liked to have seen a better Zone entry strategy for starters. Was kind of hoping that that would have been a focal point at training camp but it looks like they’re trying the same old lazy wind it up, drop back and send four guys to the blue line at once.. That strategy had a brief period of time where it was effective but NHL defenses now know how to jam it up. Time to try something different

  24. Farren246

No, they couldn’t possibly be aware of the problem and yet have also allowed it to continue for years upon years??

  25. PepperTheBrit

    They weren’t playing aggressively, imo.

  26. I feel like that wasn’t even the problem. They couldn’t get the puck into their end for most of the PP.

People forget, before Marner got hurt at the end of February, this was the BEST PP in the NHL. The best one. They finished like 9th because they went into a tailspin without Marner and then couldn’t score in the playoffs. But they were first. The PP doesn’t need some insane overhaul. Do they need to be more direct? Sure. But overhauling the units is ridiculous. Don’t get complicated. The big 4 with OEL/Rielly, the 2 kids, and the 2 vets on the second unit. There’s enough there.

  27. FollowingNecessary43

Yes…. overall but certainly on that pp as well. Great to hear the coach say this.

  28. David_EH

Why wasn’t this fixed in preseason practise or games? Seems a little soft to not more directly address the issue. Words are nice, actions are better.

  29. ManRocket99

Get used to it Marc Savard is a horrendous coach

  30. mgnorthcott

Finally, a coach who understands, and hopefully he can work out the kinks to get it working right

  31. cj-Hutch

Yeah that drop pass that wastes 5 seconds each breakout has got to go.

  32. Friggin_Grease

They just need to break up that monster PP1. I’m happy to see them not be out there for 1:45 now, but seriously. Break up the big 4.

  33. AustonDadthews

we only have 4 good forwards on this team maybe leave them out for more than one minute

  34. thismadhatter

Toronto has not had an absolute bomb from the blueline D man in forever. Its what is needed so badly. The D men look ridiculous out there.

Get someone with a clapper, have matthews in the sweet papi bomb side and get a LW that can get in to the dirty areas for some garbage collection duties.
