In Havana, Cuba. Johnson was guaranteed $30,000, plus one-third of picture privileges. Willard received 25% of total receipts and one-third of picture privileges.
Willard said before the fight that he expected to take a beating for the first 10 or 15 rounds and had trained specifically for that scenario. Johnson tried his best to make it come true.
The bout opened with both fighters facing one another with gloves at their waists and hoping their head, shoulder, foot and hand feints would force the other man out of position. Johnson easily stepped away from a lunging left/right to the body, smartly smothered a prospective jab to the head and landed a quick counter right over the top. Most of the fight was waged at long range with each fighter striking a defensive upright posture with the majority of their weight on the back foot. While Willard did most of the leading, Johnson did the majority of the scoring with singular thrusts and occasional headlong rushes. When he chose to punch – which wasn’t often – Johnson’s quick and damaging blows enabled him to build a big early lead. That said, Willard soaked up the punishment Johnson dished out with nary a flinch.

❤❤🔥🔥 so dope
Jack Johnson top 3 best Heavyweights ever ❤
Was just thinking about Jack Johnson today! He was such a real man and did as he pleased in a time where that was frowned upon. No wonder Muhammad Ali looked up to him. Do you still have that video of Jack Johnson racing, or was that someone else because I can't find it anywhere!
Wonderful video as always legends! thank you for this
Johnson seemed to be struggling a lot with Willard's height. Also at age of 37 he was clearly in bad physical shape. He was slow, didn't have his usual confidence and let the challenger bully him in the clinches. Willard's face just before ko is completely unmarked after 25 rounds. It may be used as a proof that Johnson did not really try to win this. He was there only for the money and whatever deal he made with US government. On the other hand Willard with his limited skills showed tremendous stamina and power.
Got knocked into next week.
🗣️💥🤛
Was Willard the first giant heavyweight champ?
Heared Jack layed down by his will…
Never saw someone get knock down and cover his face from the sun…lol
Willard was a monster but he learn how to box too late around 27 years old
Willard was just too big, too strong, and too fast….
Didn’t realize how boring boxing was back then. It’s more like they are dancing than boxing. Just rush in and hold.
good music it fits, this was like watching a dance
I’ve heard many say that maybe Johnson threw the fight, was not really KO’d cuz he was shielding his eyes from the sun. So why would he wait until the 26th round to throw a fight or fake being KO’d?? Doesn’t really make sense. IMO, he said f it, I’m tired af and I give up. He did get dropped too, def looked like the punch connected well. Maybe he wasn’t knocked out cold, but his legs def weren’t moving.
Why would you play that music for a fight IDIOT
But I feel sorry for those who came to watch this boxing match. Some of them had to take a boat across the sea and arrive in Cuba a month in advance. Ticket prices were not cheap at that time. Moreover, they had to endure the scorching sun and heat of 65 degrees Celsius to watch the fights. And they threw less than ten punches, and they probably only hit their targets with two punches, right? For 26 rounds, if it were like this at Madison Square Garden, the audience would boo them both off the stage. How stupid would they be to do that?Let them go and make a living from other professions because watching dogs fight is more fun. Those viewers in the past were really stupid😅😅😅.
