The Maple Leafs crease finds early (and unlikely) signs of hope

NEWARK, N.J. — “What do I do?”

A member of the Toronto Maple Leafs social media team was there to snap a photo of Dennis Hildeby holding a commemorative puck from his first NHL win. The 23-year-old wanted to know how he was supposed to pose.

I obviously don’t love Woll being hurt but I do like our organization goalie depth for the first time in a long time. I feel confident with any of Woll-Stolarz-Hildeby in net and Murray looked serviceable in the pre-season. Gone are the days of Hutchinson being penciled in for 10+ games a year.

I’m calling it here, Woll comes back, has an absolute stinker, setting this sub to Defcon 1, then follows it up with a stretch of 7-8 games, maybe even 10 where he posts a sub 1.00 GAA, then injures himself because the fanbase is not allowed nice things.

The silver lining here is that Hildeby looked legit against NJ, so him and Stolarz should keep the net in safe hands

First it was Andersen getting injured and being unreliable in net because of it. Then we got Campbell and his mental health struggles. Then Samsonov with his wild inconsistencies and seemingly fragile mindset.

Even though Woll is having his issues with staying healthy, It’s nice to feel good about our goaltending. Even if it’s really early, and there’s a long season ahead.

Gone are the days of the goalie tandem, we now rock the goalie trinity.

That new Russian Goalie on the Marlies is the real deal too. Dominated in Europe.

Jesus boys it’s 2 games into the season with 3 goalies with less than 150 NHL games between them let’s get to November and assess the goaltending situation then. Hildeby literally played 1 NHL game, Stollarz played just over 100 games since 2017 but only recently cracked the NHL and Woll is 30 something games into his career. They look good but let’s not plan the parade.
