Zadorov reveals why he requested a trade from the Flames

Zadorov was not, and should not have been, a priority for the Flames to sign. With his return it would have been worthwhile to sign him to a reasonable contract, but that “reasonable” contract would have to be a lower AAV with less term than Boston gave him.

Ultimately, I think it was probably better for both parties to part ways.

I mean this was known when he got traded, he mentioned it on an interview not long after

  3. He has said this previously so not really breaking news

As much as I liked Big Z that contract is going to be regrettable pretty quickly.

Edit: Apparently $5MM is the 65th highest defenseman AAV.

“I was talking to the ownership when [Brad] Treliving [announced he was leaving]. I still said, ‘I still believe in this team, I want to stay. I have one more year on my deal, maybe we can start talking after July 1,’” Zadorov explained.

“Everything was positive, but then we had six, seven free agents, Lindy, Hanifin, Tanev, all those guys. Everybody got an offer except me. Obviously, we talked in the room, and I felt like it was a little disrespectful for me because of how much heart and effort I put into that team and organization.”

    Saved you a click.

There was absolutely no point in keeping him around after all the other guys wanted out. I enjoyed his time here, but the contract he eventually ended up with is Boston’s problem now because that isn’t going to age well lol

Having a physical presence who was positionally questionable at best was without a doubt not worth the money Boston ponied up. Baffling how a team can look at a guy that age who’s been traded or signed that many times and not question why before giving him a dumb contract. Happy it was not us.

Unless I misunderstood, didn’t he just say the same thing about Vancouver?

I loved having him on the team (mostly) but seriously? Get over yourself lol

  9. TheThatNeverWas

When he was traded, he said he was “shocked”.

He was one of the UFAs that were never going to be extended with what he would have been asking for. Why would Conroy waste his time engaging in negotiations that would have gone nowhere. He didn’t have to request a trade to be traded. He was in the exact same boat as all the other pending UFAs that weren’t extending for what they were being offered.

He just forced the trade to happen sooner by having his agent go public due to the fact he wasn’t going to get what he would have been asking for had he received an offer, resulting in the trade happening earlier in the season.

  11. I get why he would be upset by that but come on Z, you’re clearly not a priority against the likes of Lindholm, Tanev, or Hanifin. It’s not a respect thing. Its business. It’s the shitty side of sports.

I assume he wanted more money than the Flames thought he was worth, or some version of that. Usually how these things go.

  13. Remember when scouts thought Zadorov was the next Ray Bourque?

    Yeah… me neither.

He honestly seems like such a pain in the ass. He won’t shut up lol.

Just looked up Tanev and am shocked at the deal he signed over the summer. 6 years at 4,5M for a 34 year old. Good on him, really miss him but gosh does that sound expensive for the last 3 years of that contract.

Is having your agent talk to the press about wanting his client to be traded before informing the team still considered to be a trade request?

  17. TimeForBeans420

Zadorov was terrible so im glad he wanted out and we werent the ones paying a 3rd pairing dman 5 mil a year

  18. UNaytoss

It’s a business, and the Flames were not going to offer him anything close to what he was worth on the market. He got to go to a better team, for more money. It’s tough, in all professions, when this happens to someone, but the business looks out for the business. I’m sure a lot of people here have also received lowball offers, no bonus or salary increase, because “the money isn’t there”. It’s just life.

Leaking it to the public was more the problem than the actual request.
