Mitch is no doubt a top 5 RW in the league, and for what he brings his contract actually isn't that bad……. BUT…. in 8 years, with only 1 round win, people want change, and unfortunately is spelled Mitch Marner.. They arent trading Matthews unless the return is McDavid, Nylander just signed an 8 year extension and Tavares is unmovable without giving up massive assets even if you could get him to waive his NMC…. so… that leaves Mitch as the odd man out. I don't see Mitch being on the team next year if another early playoff collapse happens, whether that's through a sign and trade or just letting him walk and using his cap space for free agents to improve the depth.
Only reason marner is hated is cause leafs fans suck to play for.. the fans run every good player or goalie oitta town. Marner cant play like matthews cause of the size, marner plays like marner hes not rhe guy to go into corners. The leafs would hate to lose mitch at the end of the day

Game 7 overtime might have not lasted 1 minute if Mitch marner didn’t let Pasternak get in the a lot all alone without even trying to play defence he’s not worth as much as nylander and if he wants more he can get out no one is signing him to more then what nylander is getting

I’ll simplify. Playoff hockey is a different game. It takes balls, ability to impose your will, sacrifice your body, hard work over soft skill, gut it out, etc. Whether Marner simply can’t or refuses to play this way is open for debate, but he doesn’t. I’ll take a Sam Bennet who gets half the reg season points over Marner every playoffs.
I’ll add, Marner has the most lucrative job of any winger in the entire league with the circumstances he plays with. Like winning the lottery to inflate points. He’s an extremely talented passer, soft skilled perimeter regular season player who’s probably around a PPG guy. Falls into that second tier imo. $9M X 8 seems about right if that’s the sort of player you are dead set on having on your team when you have Cup aspirations. Personally, I’d take the cap space.
