  1. Not a Pens fan, but seeing how good Geno and Sid still are, I'm very excited to watch them later this month in Vancouver for the first time!

  2. It was criminal that he was left off that all time list a couple years back. I know lists like that are always debatable but that was a head scratcher to me.

  3. Remember when ā€œexpertsā€ had Toews, Kane AND Keith ahead of Geno on the all time 100 list? Oh how poorly that has aged..

  4. Hmmm, 47 guys with 500 goals. When I first started watching hockey I think there were three: Richard, Howe & Hull. Beliveau, Mahvolich and Esposito joined the club not long afterwards. I think Richard is the only 500 goal scorer who played his entire career before expansion and is the only 500 goal scorer I never got to see as an active player.

  5. one of my favourite players in the NHL for a lot of years now. 2nd to Ovechkin for me as favourite players league wide. And I'm predominantly a Flyers fan myself.

  6. He could also have much more production and overall acclaim if he had more frequently hustled and thought wiser. We've seen him take off so many shifts, periods, even entire games in Pittsburgh. Not alone in this regard either. I'm sure plenty of players like this come to mind for others too.

  7. Does not get anywhere near the credit he deserves.

There were stretches during his career where he was literally the best player in the league.

  8. I like Letang, but I don't think you have to include him as a so called 3 headed monster. He is not on their level

  9. It's still mind blowing how they left him off the 100 greatest players list. Shame on who voted for that. He's the third best player who has been drafted since 2000 if you ask me behind Sid & McDavid

  10. Wanna do some multiverse analysis of how great Malkin really is? In universes where Malkin played for all the other teams, and put up the exact same point total, Malkin would be the all-time leading scorer for the following teams:

    Utah (obviously)
    Minnesota
    Winnipeg
    St. Louis
    Nashville
    Calgary
    Vegas (obviously)
tied Los Angeles (Dionne had 1307 points as a King)
    Anaheim
    Seattle (obviously)
    Vancouver
    San Jose
    Toronto
    Florida
    Tampa Bay
    Ottawa
    Montreal
    New Jersey
    New York – Rangers
    Philadelphia
    Columbus
    Carolina
    Arizona / the "real" Jets

…and for good measure, he's 53 points from overtaking Modano in Dallas, 19 points back of Perreault in Buffalo, and 46 points back of Trottier for the Islanders.

So, including the homeless records of the former Yotes/Jets, Malkin would be the all-time leading scorer for roughly 67% of the league. And by season's end, he could potentially up that percentage to 79% of the league.

And I realize you could play these games with other players and up that percentage. But the reason I worked all that out is that on the Penguins, Malkin's still only the 3rd or 4th best player in Penguins history, behind Lemieux, Crosby, and maybe Jagr.

    Crazy!

  11. Let's compare Malkin 500 to the first one to ever do it : Maurice Richard. The Rocket hit 500 goals at his 863th game while Malkin did it at his 1150th.
Also : Malkin has 807 assists while Richard got only 422 over his whole career (978 games).
While Richard was the first to ever do it, Malkin has a lot more points (341 points to be exact) than the Rocket.
Kudos Evgeni ! greatest russian player not named Ovechkin imo

  12. Honestly, just wait for all 3 of them to retire and induct them all at once with no waiting period – you could argue against it, but you'd lose.

  13. Remember Top 5 Reasons You Can't Blame? I've a list of why you can't blame Ovechkin for repeatedly losing to (or not winning as much as) Crosby. My #1 reason is Geno here ā˜šŸ»

  14. The really crazy thing is both Crosby and Malkin have lost a lot of time to injury, so much so that they hadnā€™t both played all games togetherā€¦ until 22-23, and then again in 23-24. Both in their mid-late 30s

  15. It really has been great to watch Geno, Sid, and Letang for the last 19 years. (And growing up watching Lemieux and Jagr.)

  16. If Weber and Datsyuk are first ballot – than Malkin is a first ballot. Better career than either of those players, with a career significantly better than Weber.

  17. The most talented, most exiting and dominant Player i have ever witnessed in 30 years of hockey. Such numbers with major injuries in his knee. Tore his MCL and ACL in February 2011. Tore his ACL and PCL in June 2021. For me, with his personality, he is the ultimate Player who will probably never exist againšŸ

  18. That game was special even if it was an overwhelming rollercoaster of a game lol. Not just the milestones for Malkin & Crosby but the way they happened too. Malkins goal was just an incredible effort really and his 500th being assisted by Sid when it was Malkin to assist Sid on his 500th goal. On top of that it was a go ahead goal too the energy was just incredible Im really gonna miss these guys when they retire.

  19. Been a Pens fan my entire life, the rebuild will be long and hard once we get to that point but I'm happy to let them ride out into the sunset for as long as they want. What a treat it will have been to watch these guys play hockey for over 20 years.

  20. I'm in a salary cap league, most people got burned picking malkin because of injuries and all 12 of us avoided him this year. I have 4 m left with only 3 exchanges for the year….I'm contemplating letting nyquist go for him already. Am i crazy?

  21. Letang is not a monster, nor does he deserve mentioning in the same breath as Crosby and Malkin, two actual legends. Letang is legendary for one thing…turning the puck over.

  22. You should've mentioned that in the 09 ECF he destroyed Carolina so bad they missed the playoffs for a bunch of years…šŸ˜‚

  23. The list of guys that have a Calder, Art Ross, Hart, Pearson/Lindsay, Conn Smythe, and multiple Cups in their trophy case is pretty short. The other names on the list are all considered among the greatest players ever.

  24. Fun Fact: russian Federation has never won an Olympic Gold Medal. ussr and a stateless "Olympic Team" are not the russian Federation.
