Reporter Pays the Price for Putting Positive Spin on Johnny Gaudreau Tragedy

The tragic loss of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew earlier this summer rocked the entire sports world, yet on the brink of the new season starting, NHL reporter Frank Seravalli took it upon himself to try to spin this tragedy into a positive for the team. Rick Strom breaks it down. Give us your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. Serivalli has always been an egotistical jerk. He goes on radio shows like barnburner in Calgary and is a complete ass to the hosts.

  2. So many things he could have written about – not an example of good journalism

  3. I hope the Jackets have tye most stellar year of any NHL organization. Every single game is going to be brutal for these boys
. Heavy hearts tilt the ice.

  4. The problem is that sports writers are chosen for their knowledge of sports. They are not necessarily good writers. They are also more enthusiastic about the sport than the average person and for them sport is at the centre of their lives. Thus they may lose some perspective when writing. I suspect that this idiot really thought he was being sympathetic when he wrote that tripe. He only sees the sports. He doesn't see the tragedy of the deaths of two young men which have left so many shattered. He only saw sportsmen not men. Sports writers should just stick to sports writing and this particular one should maybe consider a career change.

  5. Shitty actions like this proves me right that a lot of people in hockey are STUPID. Should consider think as many times as they can before say/doing dumb shit. This goes to players, fans, coaches, staff, media, you name it. Things need to change radically in the sport.

  6. I hate most sports commentators here in Australia, very similar to this guy . They say things without thinking about the consequences.

  7. Johnny gaudreau greatest College hockey players of all time probably one what are the best American players of his generation .

  9. If you use religion to "turn a negative to a positive" share it with your specific religious community only.

  10. Frank is known for this. As a Canucks fan, he's said some iffy things about the Vancouver fanbase and the team. He's like those Spittin' Chiclets guys. As a Canadian, I'm familiar with Johnny Hockey because he played a number of games for Calgary against the Canucks. I always thought he was a good player, but he seemed to lose his mustard after he went to Columbus for the big money. But his choice. It's a business. What happened to him was terrible, but it doesn't surprise me that Seravalli would say that sort of thing. He's a bit sensationalist and seems to say things just to get attention, while trying to assure everyone that he's a responsible journalist. I believe he's from Ohio, so there's a huge conflict of interest there. It's bad enough if you're looking at cap space saved by a player having to retire due to injury, but the guy and his brother died in an accident that wasn't their fault. That's sociopathic behaviour. But again, watching American news from Canada, none of that surprises me. People die because they have no healthcare and the media doesn't even bother to report it. But if a celebrity dies from a drug overdose or because they did something stupid and they're all over it. Not because they care about human life, but because the story is shocking and sensational.

  11. A lot of popular sports writers and announcers have been outright FIRED for inappropriate comments. Is something different now?

  12. But woke sensitive people just have to take it the wrong way and make videos about it though huh bud… lol… kudos… Proves my point

  13. It’s not that bad to think Johnny is still watching Bluejackets hockey from above. I would hope he is.

  14. it is a bad look for sure i mean while i get he wasn't trying to make it look as poor as it did, it was indeed poorly worded but if he apologized and is making a commitment to do better i can give him another chance to do so. i don't recall him ever making this kind of mistake before maybe he has or hasn't but wither way so i would like to assume it was a mistake he will easily learn from

  15. The sad thing is, Frank has always been an outstanding journalist, but a shit writer.

  16. This reporter(if you can call him that)is a complete idiot. This piece of crap should be blackballed from sportscasting.

  17. Seravalli has always been someone who does not do credible reporting.
However, in this instance he was miss understood and used a poor choice of words, it was taken the wrong way.

TYT is a troll for not seeing this.

  18. This is absolutely disgusting it doesn't matter which way you spin it even after every revised edit. WOWZERS. Add even his little commentary trying to explain himself further proves the fact that he knows he's just trying to get out of the quicksand.

  19. Hard to believe this dude took 9:25 seconds to make this video. Obviously Seravelli meant Gaudreau looking down from Heaven. The real problem here is our societies have sadly become secular. Seravelli is Italian and a Catholic. What he meant is obvious to a Christian.

  20. That’s almost as bad as saying “well at least with his death he doesn’t have to play in Columbus anymore.” Yikes Frank, big yikes

  21. I'm Catholic also and a hockey fan, this was totally inappropriate and insensitive. Dont you think the CBJ and other hockey fans and players think about Johnny Hockey everyday? Next time, Frank, don't press send when you write an article that you've edited more than once.

  22. Frank owned this and said it came off horribly wrong. Frank is a good man, super nice guy- he didn’t mean it the way it came off. He is never controversial

  23. 32 Thoughts – one per team. When he wrote the piece for Columbus, his prediction is that they will suck and luckily win the draft lottery due to their low ranking. Obviously, you would want to somehow tie in Gaudreau into Columbus' line and so he wrote what he wrote. I am confused as to how this is insensitive.

  24. This is absolutely disgusting to say on franks end just because I’m a fan of the rangers didn’t give me a reason to talk down on the blue jackets because they are in the same metropolitan division they just got over the babcock situation then you get a player who actually wanted to play in Columbus which any hockey fan can tell you it’s very rare to hear a nhl player say they wanna play for the blue jackets then life tragically takes away the gaudreau brothers and i can’t help but feel more bad for this team it’s going to be an emotional season for them and I’m rooting for them to play good just because that’s what Johnny hockey would want even in these dark times I know it’s not gonna be easy for that organization to heal from this 🙏🏼

  25. It was clumsily worded all three times. The intent of the opening was obviously not meant to be insulting or insensitive in any way. Well-meaning Catholics would instantly get that hey, we hope Johnny's looking down on the team and that he's pulling for them to have a great season and draft. The second part with the "consolation prize" bit, however, should never have been typed. That part stinks.

  26. I've never been a fan of his. This article just proves me right. He's just as dumb as Steve Simmons in Toronto. The article was absolutely stupid and heartless to the family. These so called experts like Frank are guys who probably never played, always wished that they could skate, and have no idea what harm they can cause with their articles.
