Now one for Jani Nyman
I'm not a devils fan, but if this guy turns out to be a star, the devils might be the next dynasty.
When it comes to Hämeenaho's ability to work around his skating issues, I'm encouraged by the details in his transition puck-carrying. Some of that is the basic deception, throwing defenders off by shifting his weight (as much as his stiff skating allows) and working subtle changes of direction into to his skating patterns. Some of it is more advanced — there are NHLers who never develop the habit of layering in delays and hesitations in transition, but it's a crucial skill for players who aren't quick enough to simply blow past defensemen. And it's a skill that Hämeenaho already has. He's really needed to lean on those subtle hesitations this year, as he's been moved from LW (where he still seems far more comfortable) to RW.
Do you think Hameenaho will be able to pan out as a bottom 6 grinder in the NHL, or is he top 6 or bust? Gonna be tough to make the top 6 in New Jersey with Hughes, Hischier, Bratt and Meier taking up at least 4 spots.
Lenni is going to be a stud. His situational awareness and fast thinking are going to fit NHL perfectly. Very high IQ like you said, much more important than actual speed, which has improved, he has a great glide. To top that with smooth hands, deadly shot and ”light feet”
