Ekman-Larsson and Pastrnak reverse hit comparison – Tough Call Review

Oliver Ekman-Larsson got a penalty and fine. According to Leafs fans, David Pastrnak didn’t even get so much as a penalty for what they say is the same thing. But are they really the same?

  1. Not entirely a truthful analysis. First of all, in the OEL incident, Guentzel was the last player to touch the puck. In the Pasta one, this was not the case. Secondly, the only reason that Pasta can easily keep control is the puck is against the boards and not going anywhere. Both are interference. Both should have been called penalties.
What most Toronto fans seems to be mad about is OEL got the maximum fine. Meanwhile, much worse incidents (like the Arbor Jhekxi beat down) got no suspension and a lesser fine. George Parros has an obvious need to punish Leafs players with higher fines — that Ivy League education at work there.

  2. I'm gonna disgree with your second point, since both players go upwards about the same amount, going from a crouched position to a straight up position. However, your first point is exactly right and is why one is a penalty and the other isn't

  3. No difference. Both plays should be treated the same, either no fine, or fines for both. The game is too fast to pick slo-motion nits like that.

  4. Anyone notice the dirty slash from OEL against Nikita Kucherov after the hit why is nobody talking about that I think that was dirty as well and should be fined to what do you think of it?

  5. It’s simple one is interference and the other is just a big reverse hit
    OEL didn’t have possession

  6. I think the only thing the refs look at is if you have the puck, I think if OEL had swung his stick, hit the puck and still pulled the reverse hit it’s completely fine, Pasta touched the puck before pulling it off on JT. I’m a leaf fan at heart but a fan of the NHL more, I don’t know what the reason the DOPS gave OEL but I bet my 2cents that you have to “play the puck” for a reverse hit to not be considered “interference”.

  7. OEL obviously got hit from behind, the other guy needs to be suspended. We cant have dangerous plays like that in the game. If OEL gets pushed forward, he's smashing his face off the dasher.
