Unfortunate but fair hit in a preseason game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Ben Smith made a move that set Brendan SMith on track for his noggin. The puck carrier carries onus here.

Mistimed or punk move – fact is he leaned into it with his shoulder and arm and made contact with Ben Smith's head. Whether unintentional or not, that's a fine, suspension, whatever. The guy was knocked out FFS!

There was nothing fair or legal about this check…..it's about as clear cut as these things go….you could use this hit as an instructional video about how not to check.

The league clearly wants to change the perception of such hits. A big hit is cool to see and we may think it's just part of the game, but the league and NHLPA want to protect the players because concussions can be career ending. The head can't be targeted (intentional) and/or be the principal point of contact (includes unintentional). So the player making the hit is almost 100% responsible for any head hit. That is the rule and players need to adjust their game accordingly.

@iDropHost It's no longer a fair hit because of the new rules. watch the videos on NHL.com, they explain that you are no longer aloud to hit the players head, it is eligal.
This uploader dude NhlArchive does not think ANY HIT is dirty or vicious. Unless if it's delivered by Matt Cooke. He always explains that the player getting hit was unaware or he had it coming, should have known etc etc

Definitely not dirty just unfortunate. Brendan Smith is not the type of player to throw dirty hits and he apologized multiple times after this. He missed the check.
So judging by your idiotic post I assume you think the NHL referees are right about every single thing?
It did deserve a suspension, but not nearly as many games as was given. Brendan was obviously going for a full body hit and didn't mean to catch the head. It didn't help than Ben pulled out at the last second and that's where he got caught in the head. Shit happens.

As a detroit fan I'd call this an unfortunate "dirty" hit. Though Smith obviously wasn't going for a headshot I won't deny that the hit was dirty in the final result.
Fair hit? Since when is targeting a players head a fair hit? Have you ever looked at the rules? This is completely illegal in every sense. There was no contact anywhere else but his head. You want to see a clean check with an unfortunate result? Search "Brian Campbell Destroys Umberger"… that's clean. This is illegal and sick.
filthy or not, he was still suspended for eight games and fined over 20,000 dollars.
