  1. 1st overall picks playing full time in the NHL in their draft years should be the exception, not the norm

  2. Bedard, Roy, Stankoven, Dylan Guenther all had a bigger impact than Shane Wright on Team Canada. I was disappointed in Wright. I had expected more from him. Perhaps he will be the 50 point, 200 foot 2nd line centre Shannon mentioned. Oh he was highly touted prior to entering the OHL draft. Seems like he peaked in his 1st year in Kingston.

  3. Wright proved why he wasn’t a top 3 pick with that WJC tourney i feel bad for Seattle

  4. The caveat with the 2021 draft is Power chose to stay in college. I doubt he would not have made Buffalo's roster out of camp at the time.

  5. Ya, idk I think he's definitely got more potential that a second line 50 points guy, that could be my bias talking (im from Kingston), but still, I believe he will have a breakout year next year, and become a star in the nhl. Im not saying 100points in hes Calder eligible year, but i think has more potential than what hes shown so far.

  6. Matthews and Mcdavid set the expectations for all future top picks to light up the show right away and that skewed our view of these prospects because those two guys are generational talents. Also Matthews was 19 as a rookie and played pro in Switzerland in his draft year so comparing 18 year olds coming fresh out of juniors to him is unfair.

  7. I think it's genius the way Seattle used Wright. They got him 8 NHL games, one short of the max without burning his contract. They got him the most AHL games they could, considering the rules. Which then led directly to the World Juniors. I think they got him the highest level of game/training they could without having to carry someone that didn't appear to be better than who they already had to make a playoff push this year.

  8. Not the same but imo its better for player playing big minutes in juniors/ahl than play 8-12 min in nhl, look at Rantanen.. think he spent 2 seasons in ahl and look at him now..

  9. Wonder if Bedard will fair better. It was all about Shayne Wright last year at this time, too.

  10. I am 100% behind the choices the Kraken have made in Wright's development — and as far as I can tell (as a local fan who follows the team closely), all indications are that Shane and his family agree with the choices as well. The kid just turned 19 yesterday (Happy belated birthday, Shane!) so it's reasonable to have him play another year. And besides, the Kraken are on the cusp of making the playoffs this season so it's hard to make room in the lineup right now.

I was confused by one point in your video, Shannon: I would argue that Matty Beniers did join the NHL immediately after being drafted. While it's true that he finished college because his team was vying for the championship, that was not a "development" decision but a personal one. He literally hit the ground running in the NHL scoring 9 points in the last 10 games of 2022. So in my book, he played immediately in the NHL.

  11. I would suggest that it will be a challenge to play again on this team since he played with the Tournament team

  12. Although Moser played right away after being drafted in 21, he is actually a bit older, a 2000 birth year, than the other players drafted, where all 02-03. Him playing last season would be comparable to 2018 draftees breaking into the league.

  13. I think Seattle and Ron Francis played it just right. Even though Shane wasn't in the lineup much those first couple months of the season he still got to be around NHL players and practicing with them to get a feel for what it takes to be in the show before tearing it up in the AHL for 2 weeks and having a solid World Juniors. All without burning a year off his ELC.

  14. Your insight into the hockey world is enlightening to say the least. Where ever did you learn all this stuff ? I'm surprised you don't work for an NHL or AHL team in player development. You're way better than a lot of them who want too much, too soon.

  15. McTavish made the Ducks out of camp. Not going to blame you seeing as he played for 7 different teams that year.

  16. And , I know this isn't the be all end all….but he collected NHL salary for a few months. That probably doesn't suck so bad for a kid his age

  17. They were always going to send him down before he played 10 NHL games to slide his ELC.

Only criticism I have is they should've sent him down earlier. I do wonder how he was eligible for the AHL though. I thought under 20 Canadians weren't allowed to play in the AHL if a junior team held his rights.

  18. I think the psych side is huge. Any athlete, no matter the talent level, will be made or broken by the meat between their ears.

  19. As a Rangers fan i would say im always scared about our development of forwards…the track record is pretty awful…jt miller, lias andersson, kravstov is still questionable, Duclair, Buchnevich, and with Othmann in the chamber for next season i really jus wanna see someone burst out already….the last forward pick thats worked is Kreider and it took 10 seasons maaaaaybe Chytil which after his playoffs last season i cant help but to be optimistic…sadly not a lot of FWDs taken in the 1st round either since we usually trade our 1st rounders or hit on D ex. K.Miller, lundkvist, schnieder, skjei….but really please develope one of these guys from the past 3 drafts lol

  20. I feel Bedard is just one of those guys like McDavid that come out of the draft and make a difference

  21. Chel needs to make ice 202 or 204 ft. The speed and the closing is there, the players are much bigger and faster. They need to make off side the front part of the blue line and clearin zone the front part also.

  22. It was awesome seeing him in AHL Firebirds, he was doing well! And being in Seattle he had decent stats if you take a look at per 60. Of course, he hasn't played enough to actually warrant that stat. So OHL and he'll tear it up!

  23. No mention of Brandt Clarke, one of the top prospects for the Kings though? Shannon talks about all things hockey except for the LA Kings. He should change his name to "the only popular hockey topics guy". Sheesh..

  24. Shane Wright cant hack it in the NHL. They put him where he belongs until they eventually get rid of him.

  25. I don't think he should have at all. Scouts clearly saw something in his play that showed he wasn't really a true #1 draft pick. Seattle I believe made the right choice in drafting him but should have kept him in the OHL this season to develop more at a level he was ready and comfortable in.

  26. Wright is a hell of a hockey player, be patient, Slaf should look up towards Kreider from NYR (only difference he wont never play with a better playmaker than Zibanejab), Slaf has potential to be a good 2nd line powerforward with 50pts avrg

  27. there are so many great players who took 3-4 even 5 seasons before becoming all star. right out of my mind, the best example is the sedin brothers.

  28. Too bad Montreal is subscribing to Edmonton's philosophy for player development, play them in the NHL as teenagers. Too bad really. Makes me wonder how these careers would go with development. So glad the team I root for the most develops rather than ruin.

  29. I agree with you, however it's hard to say with Wright, beyond what I've seen in reports from NHL, and what I've seen in the world juniors. Getting a bit more experience in the OHL, or other development league can only be good for the guy.
I can't help but think back to Alexander Daigle, who while skilled and very much hyped, could'nt handle the pressure of the NHL, his mental part of his development was overlooked. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong Shannon, I value your opinion on this. In the end The above should be a cautionary tale, across the league on how to better handle prospects/Draftees.

  30. Seattle knocked it out of the park with Shane’s development imo. Gets some games in the NHL and gets to practice with the big guys while making NHL money, gets some time in the A where he was great, and then gets to go back to juniors with his buddies where he was also awesome. Hopefully come this time next year he will start to get more comfortable in the NHL. I still think he’s gonna be the best out of that draft class
