Now that the season has gone into a bit of a tailspin and the playoffs aren’t happening, what are you guys hoping to see the rest of the season?
Where do you guys realistically see us drafting this year and who do you think it’ll be?
The only major victory I can see over last year is that the wings are 10th in xGA. Not allowing a ton of chances, but on the other hand this team is damn boring to watch most nights, and will go 10-20 minutes at a time without a decent scoring chance. Yes this is absolutely by design, Lalonde’s defensive system works, we just don’t have hockey players who can do offense.
I also think Husso’s greatness at the start of the year was largely over-exaggerated and was propped up by a few really good games. He was above average which is nothing to gloss over, but was never team carrying level. Don’t think Husso was more than a +3 GSAX goalie at any point. His addition has been huge but the narrative that he was carrying us or playing on a vezina level bugs me. Our early ‘success’ is much more accurately attributed to special teams in my opinion. Wings went from good special teams and bad 5v5 to bad special teams and bad 5v5, simple as that.
Question for Evan – Why do the wings suck?
Great pod as always guys. I desperately wait for each episode.. So my question is around the trajectory of the rebuild. When we look at Devils, Sabres, and Lightning, they have had a strong correlation with the success of their AHL affiliate. When we look at GR, it’s a mess. Whether it’s coaching or too many rookies etc.. how much significance does Brad place on Griffins for all the “development” for our prospects at this point of our rebuild? What changes do you think we should see if any?
