Oh to see Ryan in a met uniform
Before clendennon…mets was offered Joe Torre for him
Imagine if the Mets had kept Ryan. Seaver, Ryan, Koosman would have been the equivalent to Maddox, Glavine, and Smoltz of the Braves. Mets could have won several more WS titles had they kept Ryan.
That last curve ball had me bailing out of my seat here at work! That pitch wasn't fair!
"And emotion began to take sway over logic ….."
The only other relief appearance by a Mets pitcher in the 1969 World Series was 3 innings in Game 1 and 1/3 inning in Game 2. Games 4 and 5 were complete games. Unheard of in today’s game.
It's where Ryan's Express began.
Tommie Agee had literally a great game in this one. Perhaps the greatest game ever by an outfielder in a World Series.
The only World Series I was ever at and I had Tickets for that Play off with Atlanta which lasted only 3 games and I was at game 4 which Tom Seaver won and Ron Swabota made that catch in right field, which to this day, I can't believe how he made that catch which must have been no more than 5 inches off the grass. The thing that really annoyed me after that season ended and WHY they traded Nolan Ryan who turned out to be one of the all time greats!
Its a shame the Mets traded Nolan Ryan to the Angels.
Awesome!!!!!!!!
Imagine in a time before video having to step in the box and face this kid throwing 100 in a time where hardly anyone did? Nolan’s only ring. He earned it with this 7 out save, with some help from Agee.
I like how he gets the final out and walks toward the dugout like it's just another inning.
Two icons: Iconic MLB Pitcher Nolan Ryan, who began his MLB career with the NY Mets, and iconic broadcaster in baseball & football, Lindsey Nelson, the original voice of the NY Mets on both radio & TV.
1:21 wow
Agee n Jones – 50000 cheering , blm ?
They should of held onto him, Seaver, Ryan, Koosman need I say more !!!!
@1:33…the Mets pitcher in the jacket congratulating Nolan after picking up the save…Ryan’s best friend on the team, and himself a Mets legend and HALL of FAMER…I think we all know who that is
If you had told Nolan Ryan on this day in 1969 that he was going to be a first ballot hall of famer….IN THIRTY YEARS (1999), I think he'd probably say you're crazy.
I forgot that Nolan Ryan was a relief pitcher in the beginning of his amazing career, he is a World Series winner (1969 NY Mets)
It's interesting to see Ryan's windup and how it changed. He is more fluid here and his knee is farther from his body and not as elevated as his 70's, 80's windups were. He would crank his knee almost vertical, and pause for a split second at the top, before he unloaded with raw leg and arm power towards the plate. No offense to Sandy Koufax, but Ryan had the arm of God, because God's arm does not break down. Koufax did.
How easy would it have been to stick him in the bullpen after that…..and we would have been ROBBED of all the legends… of all the records…and of all the memories….
How tf was this man playing in the 60s
Interesting Fact: George Brett has never hit a Home Run off of Nolan Ryan his entire MLB Career. If he had Pitched for the 1972 to 1974 Oakland A's, 1975-1976 Cincinnati Reds, 1977-1978 New York Yankees, 1984 Detroit Tigers or 1992-1993 Toronto Blue Jays he likely would have won 2-3 more World Series Rings after this. For all that he has worked hard and done through his long MLB career this man should have had much better teams that provided him with at least a few World Series Rings. Other Starters like Jack Morris, Bert Blyleven and a bunch had the fortune of Pitching with stacked Offense and Defense Talent Teams that inflated their Postseason Career Records.
Yeah, this young Pitcher here he'll never amount too anything out of the league in a year or 2
Robin Ventura was 2 years old during this time lol
I know Nolan was not all that when he was with the Mets. He became a stud his first year with the Angels. But I can only imagine how the 1970's would have been for the Mets with Seaver/Koosman/Matlack/Ryan. Just imagine.
But I do wonder if Nolan would have become the legend that he was with the Angels in the 1970's with the Mets or any other NL team, due to the pitch-hitting because of offense, along with him walking all those hitters per game
:41 my goodness
Yes Ryan’s fastball was incredible and it deserves a lot of praise. But his curveball was straight nasty and a seriously underrated part of his arsenal.
That last pitch was FILTHY.
