Ryan Merkley Asks For Trade. How Did The Sharks Get Here & What Would Be A Reasonable Trade Package?

San Jose Sharks defensive prospect, Ryan Merkley, has officially asked for a trade. Start by going back and reading Merkley’s draft profiles to see how they compare to Merkley’s game now. Then analyze Merkley’s road to San Jose and the past three seasons with the Sharks and Barracuda to try and determine where the organizational failure was and how the organizational changes caused Merkley to fall through the cracks. Next, why the Sharks should target another prospect in a trade and some players that would make sense to try to acquire. Finally, how do the defensive prospects rank once Merkley is traded and why the Sharks pick a defenseman with their second pick in the upcoming draft.

  1. This will come back to bite. A quick look at PP2 and it’s clear the org failed Merkley.

  2. Sharks also gave up early on Zyzuin and Jillson. For good reason, but they were at least getting playing time in the NHL and producing points for the Sharks. It seems like the Sharks will get pennies on the dollar after burying Merkley in the AHL.

  3. do you think the Chicago Blackhawks would trade Ian Mitchell for Ryan Merkley – straight up – both need a new opportunity – he was drafted by the old regime in Chicago and seems to not be getting any opportunities at the NHL level either

  4. Nice episode, JD. Hard to disagree that there is a lot of blame to go around here. Hard to disagree with the team that Merkley never really progressed and can be a real liability in his own zone. Hard to disagree with Merkley that, despite those truths, there is no way Cicek or Harrington deserved NHL lineup spots over him. This is not like Bordelaeu or Eklund who just got here. Merkley is 3 years in and, while not particularly good in his 32 NHL games last year, certainly did not embarrass himself.

As usual, "inconsistent effort" is the mark of death for a player. If Merkley played with a perceived "motor" like Mario Ferraro (or even someone like Matt Nieto, who looks like he is trying hard without even being physical), he would probably be on the Sharks right now even if his actual performance was exactly the same. I'm not sure if this is the correct viewpoint for NHL teams to have or antiquated and begging for a team to take advantage of this talent inefficiency, but it is true nonetheless.

  5. LOL, patient with prospects? And what do you expect from them? To stay in Cuda till they reach 30? Sharks prospect management just sucks thats how it is. And it is honestly really painful to watch. I wouldnt be suprised if they will lost Bordeleau, Eklund, Bystedt.

  6. Sharks are reaping the effect of having Roy Sommer as their AHL coach and McCarthy doesn't seem to be much better. Sommer never really produced any talent of value. Most Sharks that made the big club didn't spend more than a season or so with him. Sharks failed Merkley, Grier signed players he didn't need to. Merkley is as good or better than some of the D they are using now, ie Cicek and Harringon.
