  1. it’s crazy looking at these comments and to see people argue that call. doesn’t matter what the score is, that’s the right call there

  2. This is a new ref BTW. As a rangers fan though, you don't call this. Martinson dropped the stick as soon as he saw it was broken. Chytil wasn't happy to score either

  3. "53.2 Minor Penalty – A minor penalty shall be imposed:
    (i) For throwing a stick… or any part thereof… in the direction of the puck"

This is the only relevant rule I can find. The rulebook uses the word "throw" several times without defining it, but it seems obvious to all of us what is intended. However, Wiktionary does have these definitions:

"2. (transitive) To eject or cause to fall off."
"3. (transitive) To move to another position or condition; to displace."

  4. This is a really bad call to make in a close game with less than 5 minutes left on the clock.

  5. Let me just mention that this was this ref’s 2nd or 3rd game. And he’s only been a referee for 1 year after playing hockey for 6 years. The NHL is a joke with how they hire their refs

  6. Why has the NHL officiating gotten SO bad this season? It is absolutely awful.

  7. rangers fan here……I almost never complain about or blame the refs for almost anything, but this game was horribly called both ways. really bad calls on both sides. the call against k'andre miller was friggin awful and then they called the hurricanes for a make-up penalty not long after that which was awful. I hadn't even seen this call, which I agree while he did play the puck or attempt to play it, he really couldn't have dropped his stick any faster. bad game for the refs, it happens. the real tragedy that we aren't speaking of, is how bad of an announcer Tripp Tracy is. That. Dude. Sucks. Ass. just shut up and quit your whining and bitching ffs. holy sht, worst announcer in the NHL.

  8. What makes this funny is that they played Carmina Burana-O Fortuna while showing Rod Brind'Amour losing his mind. I wish I was able to see Brind'Amour after the Rangers scored a power play goal. I wanted to see him lose his mind, lol.

But on a serious note, I am a Rangers fan and even I think it shouldn't have been a penalty.

  9. In real time, I can see how the refs think he played the puck with the broken stick – though if they could see it was broken you'd think they could see he didn't touch it. But we all had the benefit of replay. It was a bad call, but I can see how they could have thought he played it because he did take a swipe at it. Just missed it.

  10. It's because he played the puck with his hand when his stick was broken. An Avalanche player got called for something similar; played the puck with his feet with a broken stick in his hand, even though he dropped it as soon as he knew it was broken

  11. BUllshit call. Refs have been absolutely brutal this year. What a tickytacky call while headshots are getting missed.

  12. Awful call. He has to see it before he can drop it lol. He aint an oracle that can foresee the future.

  13. I’m a Ranger fan as well and that is just a brutal call. Probably one of the worse calls I’ve seen in a long time

  14. Officiating was bad all game. The phantom trip called against Miller on Svechnikov was it? Couple more chintzy calls on both sides. Just inexperienced officials, it happens — more the league's fault for not having a more substantial officiating farm system, than anything. At the end of the day, the Rangers killed their penalties and the Canes didn't.

  15. He absolutely can’t control that, nhl needs to start fining refs for intentionally altering the games.

  16. Refs taking over games way too often these days. Terrible call. With 2 minutes left and the team is behind a goal that’s just absolutely cruel

  17. The stick broke and went straight behind him, he didn't see it again until he touched it, he then immediately dropped the stick…that's not a penalty

  18. Well if you watch the clips when they slow it down, oh yes he knew, he looks right at his stick then the board battle starts and he then uses his stick he knows it’s broken, but in a board battle if the stick is broken but still intact it should be able to be used until it is in two pieces , once you drop your stick still be able to hold the puck with skates till fellow team mate can take your spot
