As someone who was born after his time and only seen pictures of him in a mask or him in present day, this is not what I expected him to look like.

One of the best, for sure.

Most clutch hockey player ever
grandhommecajun
On the Canadiens, he is “one of” the best goalies along with:
* Ken Dryden * Jacques Plante * Georges Vezina
Yeh, I am OLD.

All time best there ever was. 11 OTs for our last Cup. The run was insane. Two Cups on two different teams. The wink. The fights. The attitude.

Agreed. I don’t care what the numbers say. He’s the GOAT (goalie)
prplx
He is not even the greatest Habs goalie. But he was very good.
Chip_Winnington
1. Revolutionized the position 2. 4 cups 3 he was mvp. Really could have been all 4. 3. Can’t hear your wrong opinions with all those rings in his ears

2nd best after Hasek.
DrLivingst0ne
I’d say top 3 all time, but possibly the best one in the playoffs.

the goalie you would want for a playoff run

Let’s put the homerism away. Dominik Hasek is the goat. No one has ever been better than prime Hasek. You think Roy won the cup with bad teams? Go look at the Sabers team from 99.

Hasek was better and I’m a Hab fan.

Guys, for someone who has been watching the Habs for almost 60 years now, who grew up and played hockey in Canada, I would vote for Mr. Dryden. True, he had Robinson, Lapointe, and Savard, but he was the one who backstopped them.
Roy and Price have put in some amazing games since he left the crease, but if I had to pick one goalie for consistently making highlight reel saves and and stealing games, it would be Dryden. I will go to my grave with memories of him stonewalling the Bruins time and again against the likes of Espo, Orr, etc, etc.
Hasek and Brodeur deserve honorable mention as well, but add up the Stanley Cup rings for each of these goalies, and the analysis becomes clear. Dryden is head of his class.

64 saves in 1994 against the Bruins in the playoffs! Him against the rangers in 86 was legendary! He is up there!! Can’t dispute Plante and Dryden! But Roy was clutch!

One of the best. They don’t make ’em like this anymore.
