Tuesday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the Vancouver Canucks for their first home game of 2023. The 1st period was full of action: Vancouver would score three quick unanswered goals in the beginning half of the 1st. The Penguins swapped net minders and put Dustin Tokarski into the action. Vancouver took two penalties close together, giving Pittsburgh a 5-on-3 opportunity. Rising to the occasion, Evgeni Malkin would score his first goal of the night to make the score 3-1. But the Penguins were not done in the 1st period just yet. Sidney Crosby redirected a pass around the Canucks goaltender from Brian Dumoulin. A few moments later, Jason Zucker would tie the score with a hard shot off the faceoff. The period would end 3-3. Half way through the 2nd period, Malkin would net his second goal giving the Penguins the lead. Soon after, the Canucks would take their 4th penalty of the night and Rickard Rakell would make them pay. Malkin shot on net and hit Rakell. The puck would fall to the ice perfectly in front of a wide open net. Rakell tapped the puck in the net and put the Penguins up 5-3 to end the 2nd. The Canucks would make a push in the 3rd, closing the Penguins lead to 5-4. Fortunately, that would not be enough and the Penguins would earn their first two points at home of 2023.
Per Penguins PR, tonight marked Evgeni Malkin’s 28th career four-point game (2G-2A) – the fourth-most among all active players (Sidney Crosby, 37; Alex Ovechkin, 32; Connor McDavid, 30).

Tokarski is always reliable. Hate how we play without confidence in front of DeSmith, and this always happened at the beginning of the season too
Zuckers hit on Garland was awesome! Offense was feeling it tonight but that defense is still brutally horrid. Like how the team responded after DeSmith was pulled. Keep shooting boys, we'll need to score 5 or 6 to win each night until they get this defense figured out.
