Dennis Cholowski Detroit's Keep Sake or Trade Bait

The highly touted Dennis Cholowski was drafted 20th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Upon transitioning to the Detroit organization and Grand Rapids Griffins, Cholowski has managed to put up pretty steady points but seems to have plateaued in terms of on-ice development.
Strictly looking at the stats, Cholowski would seem like a player worth keeping in the Detroit organization, but his on-ice performance has us baffled.

We take a dive into Cholowski’s history, where he is now, our concerns and ultimately if Detroit should hang on to him or let him go.

  1. To me, I think Cholowski is lacking that hockey sense you need to be a solid defensmen in the NHL….atleast for now. I hope I'm wrong but decisions are gonna have to be made eventually. Over the last 4 years the wings have had an insane amount of picks in the first 3 rounds. Over the next few years this should not only create great competition but also give Yzerman alot to work with as far as trades go. If Cholowski doesnt show improvement soon he might not be worth anything to be honest.
I also wanted to say I enjoy your videos as there really arent many talking about the redwings prospects and you guys give a certain insight I cant really find anywhere. Keep up the good work!

  2. I think next season will be Dennis Cholowski most important season in his young career, for him to prove to Detroit that he can be more consistent on a daily basis. He needs to improve his game overall first, before next season starts. He always has a great start to every season, but has fizzled as the season goes on. Obviously, it's not easy mentally being benched in front of his home crowd, and being send down to G.R. numerous times. I'm sure that has an effect on his psyche too.

  3. Cholowski played in the BCHL and WHL not the QMJHL. I don't think he has peaked yet, but I agree he might be good trade bait.

  4. I think you guys are right on with this, I haven’t seen any of his play in GR, but from what Ive see I just don’t see Cholowski ever having the competitiveness you need to have to be a top 4 Defenseman in the NHL and also with the type of Dman he is, I don’t see the wings using him in a bottom pairing role, other guys like Gustav Lindstrom will take those spots

  5. Between him, svech, and rass, it seems like we've whiffed on too many first round picks the last couple years. Glad we got someone new to stear the ship.

  6. He's got the offensive skill, but his defensive positioning and decision making requires a lot of work.
Back in 2018 he started out strong and his defensive game tanked as the season went on. Not sure how much is that other teams learning to exploit him, flaws in his game showing, or effects of the Wings coaching staff.

Literally every defenseman took a step back under Blashill/Houda and I doubt that's a coincidence. Even Hronek got worst defensively as 19-20 season went along.

Think Horwovski was drafted out of the BC league instead of the Q.He's a BC boy and I was pissed when Blash scratched him for the game in Vancouver. Team only goes out there once a year. Come to think of it, Blash scratched him on his own bobblehead night. Must have learned that one from Babcock.

  7. You can always allow him to leave go play for the Kings. It worked out really well for us with Martin Frk ;-P

  8. Personally I wouldn’t be upset if we trade him. It was a pretty big tell when you get sent down for being a defensive liability. We had enough of those through the years like Ericsson, Daly, Kindl. I hope he figures it out sooner rather than later. Great video as always!

  9. Great video! I agree with your point of view of him looking like he has plateaued.

It seems wild to think that the Wings got Hronek in the same draft year. Hronek just looks so much more mature on the ice.

  10. Just Found your channel you guys are adorable and very knowledgeable….huge wings fan just trying to be patient and stick with the Yzerplan!
