Gotta disagree with most of the comment section here, looks like a trip to me. Laff is turning, doing crossovers, about to pass the puck (hence leaning on the stick when it’s knocked out from beneath him). Falling while turning = you wipe out, you don’t just go down normally
Someone please explain why if there is an embellishment penalty there is still a tripping penalty if he embellished it and took himself down he wasn’t tripped
Honestly I think the call was right, Lafreniere did sell Duhaime's trip and got caught, there was very little contact. If he (Lafreniere) continued skating they both likely stay out of the sin bin, but as it is, they both go.
Edit: now that I've taken another look, it probably only should have been Lafreniere penalized and the Wild on the PP.
This happened to the Devils also. Don't know how you can have a tripping call and embellishment. Either you're tripped and you fall or you're not tripped and you fall.
how the fuck can someone get called for tripping, and their opponent get called for embellishment on the same play? Lmao it either was a trip, or he embellished a trip, how can it be both?
Okay, I think we're all on the same team here as far as how these calls should be made (except for y'all who are like "as per the NHL rulebook…") :
1.) Embellishing is soft and embarrassing and should be left in men's soccer and the NBA. 2.) For a player to be penalized for embellishing, someone would have had to commit a penalty on said player. 3.) If a player is trying to sell a penalty that hasn't even occurred (e.g. what happened in this video) (aka: flopping), they should be penalized for it and the opposing team should be on the PP.

He sold it too much, sure he dived but could clearly see he lost balance
Trying to make a dollar outta 15 cents.
I mean he could have caught an edge but yeah its a tough call to make
sam rosen reaching astronomical levels of homerism here, forcing his own color commentator to say there was no trip ROFL
It's either a trip or embellishment not both. Fucking make up penalties are ruining the game

Respect to the one announcer whos not an absolute homer
There was no trip, Lafreniere is just a gutless goon.

They need to start calling that embellishment penalty as a stand alone call and not with a hooking/tripping call!

How can you call a trip on an embellishment call. It's either tripping or embellishment, not both.
That's definitely NOT a trip.

He fell by accident
Laffy lost an edge … shouldn’t have been a trip call … and embellishment is insane as well … just a ref trying to fix their stupid mistake 🙄
It was a trip

There is no embellishment. There is no trip. Lafreniere slipped.
You know how to fix this NHL? Only call the embellishment penalty and send the other team to the PP. Problem solved.
CALL ONE OR THE OTHER!!!!!! It was either a trip or a dive!!!! This was a dive.
