San Jose Sharks Fall 4-2 To The LA Kings: Can They Learn Something From Kings Rebuild?

The San Jose Sharks couldn’t complete the comeback against the LA Kings as they fall 4-2. Look at how the Sharks might learn something from the Kings’ rebuild by keeping veterans around in cases like Drew Doughty and Dustin Brown while their young players grow and if the Sharks should just open the checkbook for Timo Meier. Then discuss James Reimer’s best game since his injury, the frantic pace at which this game was played, and how the Tomas Hertl, Kevin Labanc, and Meier line kept up. Finally, react to William Eklund fighting in the San Jose Barracuda game and why their 5-2 loss to the San Diego Gulls will be a key learning experience for both the team and Coach John McCarthy.

  1. Malcolm Gladwell had a podcast episode with the concept being "always pull the goalie" in life (as in take risks that increase your odds of succeeding where the downside is getting a bit embarrassed by failing harder) where he talked to mathematicians who had written a paper where they calculated that the best time to pull the goalie when you're down by a goal was with 5 minutes and 40 seconds left in the game and a team down by 2 goals should pull their goalie with 11 minutes and 40 seconds left. He added that if you allow a goal with the goalie pulled, you should never put your goalie back in, even if the team is down by 10 goals (unless you tie it of course).
He pointed out that no coach would do it because it would create lopsided games and look terrible, and fans might feel robbed of a chance for a comeback or at least an exciting ending to the game, but theoretically you'd win more extra games by doing that than by not doing it.
