Did Islanders get good value for trading 13 overall pick?

The Islanders did exactly what they thought they would do. They didn’t select a player with their 13th overall pick. They traded it to Montreal for Alexander Romanov and a 4th. Was that good value?

  1. Yes and no because they got what they wanted but they had to give up a good pick which is unfortunate however Romanov is a pretty good defenseman who is still very young and we did very well in the draft

  2. The window is NOW, and they leveraged a what-if from a weaker draft for a known commodity needed Top 4 D-man. The armchair GMs need to back off.
Also, anyone saying they could’ve had DeBrincat don’t realize the falloff from 7 to 13 in this draft.

  3. Analyst Dom L. from “The Athletic” says that Romanov has shown he is not an NHL caliber defenseman and the 20 min ATOI is just a last place team showcasing him. Not only that, he says his play got WORSE as the season progressed. Also, there is no more a guarantee that he will take the next step forward anymore than our 13 pick would have had we retained the pick. What say you?

  4. Bottom line is he has hopefully gotten a starter for the top four. Because last October proved, when your top four are down so goes the team. He does have a strong competitive edge and played three years with Sorokin for CSKA Moscow where they won the KHL Championship.

  5. I completely disagree. I agree with you on the fact that Romanov is a good pickup and something we needed, but I disagree that there is nothing to complain about. Is Romanov a good top 4 d-man? Maybe? He hasn’t shown that much yet. Which is why he’s NOT worth the 13TH OVERALL PICK. Is he worth a second and third rounder? Or even a mid 20s pick? Absolutely. But 13th overall has really high value, and Romanov does not equate to the value that we gave up. Just my opinion.

  6. Top 20 in Hits. We are all gonna love this guy. Habs fans are still upset about losing him. Habs fans…in the mecca of hockey he was a fan favorite. That should say enough… we’ve traded a top 5 pick who scores 20+ a year for cal clutterbuck before. We know know we are and this guy could be an isles identity player for the next 10 years

  7. we could have had Lambert, and many other forwards were out there, why do we have young D-men in the AHL if we go out of our system and get a D-man,,,,Has he given up on Bolduc, Wilde, Wotherspoon, what about these guys? Also if our goalie is so good we should not have to worry about defense as much, we should have come away with a elite forward.in my opinion…great video…keep it up

  8. Great analysis. We may disagree with the trade, but you can’t say it was a stupid move made by a senile GM

  9. If you don't like this trade then you are for a blow up and rebuild and want to give up on this current roster. I look at it as Romanov replaces Chara and that alone is a tremendous upgrade.

  10. It was a good trade at the wrong time. Lou hasn't fixed the big issue, a scoring forward.

I'm tired of Lou. He's lost his touch. Loses out on big player signings (Pan, Tavares, Tarasenko, Stone) and bleeds good players (Eberle, Toews) all while mismanaging cap and bleeding our prospect pool dry. Snow was better at picks and making deals. Imagine what would have happened if Boychuck didn't retire when he did and free up $5.5 mil.

  11. Romanov won't be a top 4 on the isles. Obviously, Pelech, Pulock and Dobson are the top 3. Mayfield has a slightly higher defensive rating, plays more minutes, hits hard and blocks a lot of shots. Lane will probably pair Romanov with Pelech or Pulock more to back up his defensive deficiencies, not because he is better than Scott.
