  1. After reviewing the play, it was a good call as Zach Dean's hit was malicious and forceful.

If Canada loses to the Czechs, its Zach's fault for his careless mistake and lack of impulse control.

  2. As you’ve said many times before, why do they have to launch upwards towards the head? If he stayed low and hit him in the chest, it would have still been a great hit.

  3. Ejection feels like a stiff penalty. Definitely illegal, but probably because it’s juniors they assess a heavier penalty.

  4. Since I don’t get to watch this tournament I’m going to ask if there was a video review in game. I’m guessing it was called a major based on the comments I’ve seen.

  5. Head contact for sure,he should have made contact then driven through the check that way it would of been a good clean hit. Contact with the chest .

  6. People saying this is a bad call are trying to enforce NHL rules on an IIHF tournament. There's zero room to doubt this as a hit to the head. The angle at 0:24 shows it all. He definitely makes contact with the head. Maybe not 'primarily' but only the NHL cares about that.

Also, he has an entire low-to-high movement on the hit while also leaving the ice with his skates.

If you know the actual rule, you know this is bad.

  7. Here is the actual rule about it being called a check to the head.

“48.1. ILLEGAL CHECK TO THE HEAD OR NECK
There is no clean check to the head or neck. The Player delivering the hit must avoid hitting the opponent’s head or neck.
A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted. This rule supersedes all similar actions regarding hits to the head and neck.
When a Player is skating with their head up, whether they are in possession of the puck and may reasonably be expecting impending contact, an opponent does not have the right to hit them on the head or neck.”
