Absolutely. Love Romy, but the trade got us Dach and opened up a spot for Guhle who looks poised to be a #2D.

  2. Yes.

He was a very nice player but we had, and still have too much of this model.

I’m good with it, Romy was a good kid but Wifi seems to have replaced his toughness on the back end with a little more offense. I wish Romy all the best, he played hard when he was here.

I like Dach and Romanov both as players, but to me defence is a more important position.

If you had asked me on November 23, when he had 17 points in 19 games, I would definitely have said it was more than worth it. Right now he’s had 9 points in his last 27 and I’m definitely less certain.

Edit: I didn’t say that I really like Dach’s game from just eye-test, I like the way he plays and i like that he shows some attitude. And in his defence the whole team offence went right into the toilet at the same time.

    He lost his jawline…

We definitely had the better looking Romanov

Guhle and Xhekaj have essentially filled the Romanov void, I think it was the right move to try and fill a different need.

I think it’s worth the return.

Romanov is/is going to be a good second pairing D. It’s just that he is a redundancy for us. He’s going to be in the same tier of player as Harris, Wifi, and a few other may become and Guhle has far more upside. The trade wasn’t just trading a young d, it was trading from a position of strength to acquire a position of weakness.

Dach is more important to the team than Romanov would’ve been. We need young forwards with first line upside.

  8. For sure, Dach is looking like he has potential to be a quality top 6 player. Also I know advanced stats aren’t everything but they really favor Dach when comparing the two.

    Islanders:

With Romanov on the ice: 42.3 xGF%

Without Romanov on the ice: 52.4 xGF%

    Habs:

With Dach on the ice: 50 xGF%

Without Dach on the ice: 36.9 xGF%

Dach has been one of our best players this year, and is really making an impact even on an awful team.

  9. 14 points in 43 games. Look at my boy growing. I was mad at the trade at the first, though mostly cause I wanted us to the pick, but Dach is much better than I expected. I just hope he can work his back at center.

One is an elite Forward in his 3rd year and the other is a solid D-man in his 2nd year with a strong core in front it him! It’s apples and orange trade.
1 team is tanking and the other pushing a playoff spot! I think it was a good trade for all!

  11. private_liberty

Yes, because we have LD prospects to fill the position. I believe it was a win/win/win trade. Chicago wants to tank and wasn’t sure about Dach’s potential. Islander wanted to improve immediately. Habs has too many LD and we got a young forward for Romanov.

  12. Well my favorite way to evaluate a defensive D is by using points

  13. TheDench11

Yes, Dach compliments Suzuki and Caufield nicely on the first line. We also have so many defensive prospects like Romanov and even Xhekaj replaces him nicely.

  14. ukrainianhab

He’s a 5/6 defensemen that is replaced by Xhekaj who is already better than him IMO.

I do want Dach to develop a little more into a more offensive player but I’m not sure there. Still think it’s a good move.

  15. mountainpope

I never liked him, I told everyone here he should be traded and he was so I’m very happy

  16. SevenLeg

    Absolutely.

We all liked Romanov, but he was already pretty close to his ceiling which is around an average second pair LD. He’s likely not going to be any better than he already is. With the current prospect/rookie depth on LD, he was expendable and Hughes managed to trade a surplus for a need.

  17. shadopup

Romy has that youthful enthusiastic smile that is as radiant as Caufield and Slafkovsky. That is something I kinda miss a bit. He was definitely a strong clean hitter.

Otherwise every other part of his game wasn’t noteworthy. He definitely wasn’t a spare part and was certainly good enough for the 3rd pairing at least. I was disappointed he wasn’t used more in the 2021 playoff run. But getting a 1st round pick for him was great considering he was a 2nd round pick himself. In retrospect seeing as the Habs had many LD prospects it was worth the risk.

It’s not like the Habs D right now would be doing better if they had kept Romy.

  18. G_skins31

If dach ends up playing center then yes but trading another top 4 defense man for a top 6 winger isn’t worth it imo.

I bet frank Nazar will be the better player out of the 3 of them anyways

  19. looks like hes doing well there, i dont think he would produce like that on this roster.

So, yes at this point I think it was a good trade, apparently for both these teams.

  20. Yes. Dach is great and we really didn’t need Romanov that badly. We have 5 solid rookie D right now and even more in the system. We’re kinda overflowing with them.
