Last time we talked about Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the idea of those two being trade to the Detroit Red Wings. Today, we’re pulling from the same Ted Kulfan article to discuss a Jaden Schwartz / Jake Allen trade, between the St. Louis Blues and the Wings.
This idea stems from the NHL salary cap, and how the St. Louis Blues are one of the teams that’s desperate for cap.

Many thanks for following up with this video!! Here's my thoughts, I like Schwartz and he's certainly the sort of player who's going to make an impact. As for Allen, goal tending is another issue for the team. Although not official yet, I can't see Jimmy back after the stinker he's had this season. That does leave a vacancy that Allen is totally able to fill as I'm not sure to that Bernier is going to be able to shoulder so much of a burden and we want him to have a decent season so it makes him an attractive trade option. I'm pretty certain that all of our goalie prospects are some way off being NHL ready and I really don't know what the free agent market has available either. So perhaps this could be a good move for us. I have reservations about contracts for these guys going forward, given their age. I think if this sort of deal is going to happen then it will be after the draft, I think Yzerman may try and evaluate what's in the system then and see what he would consider expendable. Then perhaps a pick/prospect deal could be done but I doubt if we'd part with any second rounders and most definitely not our first.
300 in an hour, just like you asked for😉
Joe Veleno, Justin abdelkader, Brendan Perlini and a second for jaden shwartz
The contracts are the big thing. don't want to trade for UFA guys in a rebuild, would need to lock them down
Love how you have NHL 20 in the background!! Great channel buddy thanks!!
I think Detroit or Ottawa could do this for some 2nd and 3rd rounders
Only way I see this happening is if Detroit gives up either ehn or a 6/7 round pick. Anything more than that is making up for the fabbri/de la rose trade. Detroit doesn't need either player (I agree both could help) and St Louis saves a lot of cap space.
Ottawa makes sense for Schwartz
Yes players like Allen and Bozek will be available. Yes you can make the case STL might have to include juice to facilitate. Schwartz is not that juice.
I think they’d trade Bozak before they would trade Schwartz. The blues have maybe 8 or 9 centers ranging from top tier to pretty decent. Bozak is more expendable. The left wing is would not be as deep. We’d struggle to fine someone to replace him on the line with Tarasenko and Schenn. Great video btw!
300 views?!?! You deserve way more than that!
Good stuff for the Wings to consider for future advancement.
ive been watching hockey for a very long time and i can honestly tell you that the reason detroit should take advantage of potential deals like this one is that there will probably never be another opportunity like this. this is a once in a lifetime situation causing some hockey teams to be litterally put in a hole because of plans that were fiscally responsible just 5 months ago. teams with cap space can really take a huge step forward quickly with some smart trades. within 2 years everything will balance out somewhat and the opportunity will be gone.
I think it's a good fit.. i don't think the wings will go out and buy an all star goalie because there is no need for one right now.. so a guy like allen or demko would be smart for 3-5 years. And I've always liked shwartz he's solid. And wouldn't have to give much up because they have leverage with the cap space
Schwartz is already out of his prime and injury prone so why bother trading him to the red wings for picks and prospects that can help the wings in the future.
I i was detroit i would go after guys around kapanens age. I doubt they give up picks for veterans..
I think Yzerman will look to acquire a goalie. He might try to take on all of Loui Erickson's contract for Thatcher Demko in return. That could be a great option. I could also see Yzerman possibly attempt an offer sheet for Mikhail Sergachev. Since Tampa Bay will be in a cap bind for the 2020-2021 season. Yzerman could try to sign Mikhail Sergachev via an offer sheet for 1 year at 4.227 million which would be the max amount for Detroit to give up their 2nd round draft pick to Tampa Bay. If Mikhail Sergachev agrees to that offer sheet, Tampa Bay would have to match that offer. There is a good chance another team could offer more. Imagine if Yzerman acquired both Loui Erickson, Thatcher Demko and Mikhail Sergachev for just a 2nd round draft pick.
Why would the red wings trade for Schwartz it’s pointless
Nah we are looking look for draft capital or prospects. We can eat bad contracts for draft picks and prospects. Our rebuild is going take a bit longer so taking on a guy in his late 20's is at least a few years away when we are starting become competitive again.
I’m sorry did u say 300 views??? Bruh raise ur sights, ur content is awesome
I think the Wings will be fine with a prospect in System such as Victor BRattstrom in goal for back up or Yzerman goes after Iaroslav Askarov in their 4th pick, but they will target a forward in Rossi, Perfetti or Jack Quinn which makes the most sense. Drysdale is another look for D so not sure what move that Yzerman will make. Drysdale and Jake Sanderson are top draft D men. To be honest if Canadiens stink in the qualifier round and rumors that Price could be traded and i would bet you all Price would be moved out for a rebuild and Yzerman wouldn't think two seconds to put Deykeyser, Mantha and a prospect for that trade. I don't see any trades with St Louis. Draft pick is on Yzerman's mind and free agency then maybe trades, but it wouldn't surprise me about Price coming to Detroit. Rumor is Seattle is targeting Price as well. I hear rumors about Brock Boeser trade talks as well.
Blues aren’t trading Schwartz. He’s a core player. Bozak, Allen and Steen will be moved first.
Look at what happened when Yzerman traded with St Louis before. He stole Fabbri! Guaranteed he will steal Allen and Schwartz to.
I wonder why we didn't take a stab at Casey DeSmith when PIT put him on waivers.
Keep up the good work. Just found you and subscribed. Love the Red Wing talk.
Wings have no prospects. They need to rebuild their prospect pipeline
I'd rather see Yzerman target a bottom 6 center that is still young and could play on a checking line next to guys like Grewe and Givani Smith ( Sam Bennett? ) Somewhat similar to what Shawn Thornton brought to the Bruins or Draper did with the old Wings teams.
2 big problems though.
1. They a both UFAs after 1 single season. The red wings will be bad for at least a few more years so they might not want to stay in Detroit
2. the cost of aquiring them. The Blues wouldn't really want cap going back so they like picks or future picks. And as Detroit is bad right now it would mean the Blues would get
Detoit's high picks…
You are more than welcome to take Jake Allen off the hands of the Blues for a crisp high five in my opinion. He is not a good goalie by any stretch. His biggest weakness is the five hole. The reason the Blues started out so bad last year was they had little confidence in his goaltending. If you go back and watch replays of earlier games in the 2018-19 season you will see how they played very cautiously because the players new that he wouldn't be their if they got in trouble. Then fast forward to Binnington in the net giving the skaters confidence to push more in the offensive zone and things took a huge turn for the Blues. Also look at Allen's numbers in the months of January and February and you see a dramatic drop every year. So a crisp high five and maybe a draft pick for Allen seems like a big win for the Blues in that trade.
Well, to offer a slightly different opinion – i'm actually a Blues fan so it's neat hearing other teams' fans interest in our guys (especially outside of the usual names like Binnington, O'Reilly, Petro, etc). I don't see the Blues parting with either player easily, mostly because the team wants to press the momentum (or whatever is left of it at this point) from last year's cup run. But that said, let's get into it..
Jake Allen did have that impressive .927 save percentage last season, but that's only the second time in his career that he's gotten as high as .920 (see 2015/16). It was also his least amount of games played of any season. STL tried to make him a starting goalie and he just really didn't quite get it done. I lovingly refer to him as an elite level backup goalie. With a reduced workload and without the pressure of being "the guy" you really get to see his best. He's expensive as a backup and I could see Army having the conversation. So, buyer beware, I guess?
Jaden Schwartz, yeah that's a tough sell. Jaden is a great locker room guy, he's smart with and without the puck, he doesn't make a lot of mistakes, and brings a lot of stability to his line. His play has really grown over the years and I think that if Army was going to deal him it would cost an arm and a leg to pry him away from STL.
Who should you be looking for? Well, realistically, you might ask for guys like Robert Thomas and Sammy Blais, maybe Zach Sanford if you really need options on the wing. I don't think they would go lightly, but if Detroit is rebuilding then these young up and coming talents would likely really bloom given the opportunity to see really significant ice time. They're cheap, young, talented and with lots of upside. They'd be Detroit's best deals.
What would STL let go of? As much as I love him, Alex Steen is probably on the chopping block. At 36, a year left on his contract, with a shrinking role and a 5.75 hit to the cap, he's likely in his last season here, but I can't see any team making a big deal to scoop him up. He'll could even just go to free agency. Maybe Bozak, he's a little younger and a little cheaper than Steen but his contract will be up soon enough and he didn't really have the big point seasons like he did in Toronto. Lastly, if Justin Faulk doesn't get it together, he'll be packing. STL spent a lot and got very little in return, hopefully he bounces back to those high 30s / low 40s point seasons because 16pts just won't cut it.
Nooe don't want jake Allen. Nope.. We suffered with Howard for years.. Nope keep Allen away
So still waiting to hear what the Wings would give up. Glossing it over with only saying a "couple of picks" doesn't justify it from The Blues perspective. Yes The Blues will have cap space issues but if you want to make trade proposals then gotta have details. I don't believe Schwartz will be leaving St. Louis…maybe Allen but Blues have other players they would look to offer up before taking out a core player.
I don't see them adding a goalie anytime soon. For what reason?
there's not any indication of zadina even being good in the nhl. and ur not winning much of anything when larkin is the only good player
It's apparent you're a Red Wings fan…..why on God's green earth would the Blues trade away Schwartz? Just plain stupid
Jake Allen had a very good year. The Blues were the best in the West even without Tarasenko. Trading him makes sense having Binnington for the Cap.
You stay away of Jaden Schwartz..He's Ours!!!
That being said the Blues are very likely going to move Allen $4.35m, Steen $5.75m and Faulk $6.5m. After next year Bozak $5m comes off the books. They will have the cap space available to keep Dunn, Schwartz and Pietranglo if they play their cards right. They also have promising lower cost prospects Kyrou, Thomas and Kostin to step in for some of the guys they will lose. Schwatrz is vital to the Blues success. No way they move him.
Wait so what would the blues get in return
So your saying nobody will watch this video because you're talking about the Blues?
Sorry but Blues won't be trading Schwartz!
If you think the Blues will trade Jaden you are high. Just because they have money and are a target doesn't mean the Blues are just going to trade them. And plus Jake is a great backup goalie
Detroit needs to draft the top goalie, they need to stop the puck. that is the tenant of hockey. Stop the puck and win games. Simple really! this goalie is a franchise type player which Detroit can build around. Come on Stevie pull the trigger! Pick up scorers in the free agency!
Schwartz is one of the most underrated players in the NHL. He is solid both offensively and defensively. He has fantastic awareness. I can't ever remember him losing a board battle… like ever. He is a glue guy and I think the Blues realize how important he is. Very doubtful that he gets moved.
Not to be mean, but as a Wings fan, this take is insanely ridiculous. We were the worst team in the modern era last year, we are not a few signings away from being a good team. We would never trade for Allen and trading for Schwartz who will just walk in free agency is redundant and honestly, would be a terrible move. Even if we could resign him, we'd have to overpay and by the time we start being a good team, he'll be into his 30's. What we would have to give up to get these players is more valuable then what Allen and Schwartz would provide.
All the Wings should be doing with their cap space right now is taking bad contracts with a couple years term left from teams that are up against the cap and getting picks or solid prospects for taking these contracts. For example, Vancouver needs cap space. We could offer to take Eriksson from them and get a Demko or first round pick for doing so.
The Wings should not be adding anyone over the age of 25 right now and should instead be focussed on accumulating as many high picks and prospects as possible and based on Yzermans comments about needing to be patient with the rebuild, I don't think he will be making any trades of this nature, nor should he.
Sorry that trade isn't going to happen.
