For the price, I don’t think this works for us. And I mean that both in the cost to acquire him and the cost to even *qualify* him. His QO after this season is 10 million. We simply cannot afford that. And I don’t think we will be able to easily flip him again for assets. Why would an opposing GM do us any favors?
Do you really want to trade a minimum of a 1st AND a young roster player (think one of Laf, Kakko, Miller, or Fil) and then probably another decent prospect for ~20 games of a player? And then if we try to keep him in the offseason, you’re looking at buyouts and potentially more trades to fit that QO or long term extension under the cap.
Great player, would love to have him, but I just don’t see it working with the current cap situation we’re in without sacrificing too many assets.

The article incorrectly says Meier will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year. He will be a restricted free agent, ergo the need for a qualifying offer. If he isn’t extended one, then he becomes unrestricted.
I’m quite curious what the Rangers have in mind if he’s truly at the top of the list now. Would they actually try to re-sign him, or are they thinking pure rental? Seems like it would have to be a rental, which means a much lower offer to San Jose. Obviously they’re not going to love that, so…
As for Patrick Kane, also mentioned in this article, I honestly don’t want to go anywhere near him. Ride or die with Kravy on the 2nd line.

I feel like the sharks being a major trade partner in the future is very likely, id be very happy to get a few of their players but honestly theyre just trying to get young talent to rebuild, so getting rid of laf wouldnt be something id risk until after next season if there is still no development. If ek65 was offered as a forward and not a defenseman id be more curious but we absolutely need a defensive upgrade going forward and low cap flexibility, we have great players but our defense has been poor at protecting the neutral zone and near the net.

No. Horrible idea.

An uncomfortable truth is that without any moves this year, we will absolutely head into the playoffs weaker than when we had copp, vatrano, strome, Motte etc.

The only logical reason to acquire Meier in what he would cost for a trade is if they can re-sign him and they simply can’t afford him.
The only way that can work is if a big salary like Panarin goes the other way, which I sincerely doubt would happen for a multitude of reasons unless Panarin is just straight up not happy and doing a good job of keeping that quiet. He did thrive with Quinn and played much better hockey with him. I still don’t believe he isn’t happy, but I can’t think of. Areason the Rangers would explore Meier unless they had a big salary leaving.
I can’t see Zib, Fox, or Trouba going. I really doubt Bread, but he’s the only one I can possibly envision it happening with, but I’d still be absolutely shocked. More likely the source is BS.
In short, yeah of course they’re interested in Meier, who wouldn’t be, but the cap room is not there.

THANK YOU.
I’VE LITERALLY BEEN SAYING THIS FOR MONTHS, I’m glad this finally is catching on.
Timo is our guy. He shoots the fuck outta the puck. Put him on Arty’s RW and it’s bangers all day.

Meier is a name I would like to have. He shoots, younger than Kane but…I don’t see it happening.
And of course there is interest…any team would be interested.
It could be his fucking agent feeding that line to a reporter.

So, here’s the thing… We obviously can’t afford a $10m qualifying offer, and I didn’t want to mortgage the team’s future (Miller, Chytil, Kakko, Schneider, Lindgren, Lafrenière, in relative order of importance) for one guy.
But if it’s possible to get him for the playoffs and either sign and trade him or trade his negotiating rights away, I think it’s not a terrible idea to explore. *Depending on what it would cost us, though.*
Plus, God forbid we do something crazy like trade away some of those future players away to where we could almost afford him, there’s no reason we can’t extend him to something less than his qualifying offer, right? I mean, Carolina offer sheeted Kotkaniemi to a $6.1m (and $20 signing bonus) contact, then gave him a long term contact at only $4.8m AAV. If we decided Timo is out guy and wanted him long term, could we do something similar, $7-8m for many years? (NOT SAYING that’s a great idea, just asking)

Rather than Gostisbehere, lock up defense, and make a push for the playoffs
