Montreal Canadiens injuries: Slafkovsky out for the rest of the year, what does Kent Hughes do now?

Inside today’s Locked on Canadiens:

Bad injury news all the way around for the Habs as the team announced that four players are set to miss moderate to significant time over the coming weeks. The most worrisome part of it all is that rookie Juraj Slafkovsky is going to miss at least three months, which means for all intents and purposes, that his rookie season is over. There is some positive news, but the hosts break down all the news, and what it means.

What does this rash of injuries mean for the Canadiens beyond the NHL, and does it impact the plan for upcoming Trade Deadline? With a lack of spare bodies in the AHL and ECHL, namely players on NHL deals who can play a big role in Montreal, the pressure is going to increase all the way around on veterans who have struggled a fair bit this season. Can Kent Hughes still work some magic and find reinforcements?

Speaking of Hughes, the Canadiens GM spoke to the media for a mid-season recap and what his plans are for approaching the rest of the season. Scott and Laura take a look at what Hughes had to say, including some hugely important praise for both Sean Monahan and Samuel Montembeault.

  1. New GM and Management Same Methods to Ruin talented young players by Rushing them into the NHL. Slaf should be dominating in Europe all season. AHL next year THEN make the NHL as a 20 or 21 year old! How hard is it to do this?!

  2. Slafkovsky could have gotten hurt anywhere he could have gotten hurt in Europe, AHL the OHL like Any league he could have gotten hurt but I would rather him get hurt with 40 games of Solid NHL Experience Rather then 40 games of Leagues that would make him go back into bad habits and continue the same mistakes that hurt his play sending him to Europe would have done nothing for him sending him to the OHL would have done nothing for him ya he would have killed everyone and scored like crazy and ran everyone over and you can’t just think your gonna go into the NHL and Run everyone over and score when ever you want sometimes it works but no where near the amount it works in the OHL or the AHL so the best thing for Juraj was to play and get use to the NHL let him learn and get use to how things work in the NHL next year he will come out again and see what he can do if he struggles more next year then ya maybe we send him down but if he’s being productive and learning and improving there’s no need to take him away from the most important experience you can have and that’s playing in the NHL

  3. People don't realise how dangerous the AhL is. Number one pick is such a huge target and will be head hunted by every other player. I support the Canadians on deciding to do what is best for slavkovsky. According to slavkovsky's NHL blog he has complete faith in the system and he enjoyed staying with the habs. Unfortunately the rumor is that he fractured his knee cap and that can be a very tricky injury to heal properly.

  4. It wont change anything for the deadline. Its a tanking year, they can dress AHL player if needed and sign whoever for the lions.
