Lots of people saying the Leafs should or shouldn’t without actually explaining their reasoning. Chace gives some good reasons as to why it would make sense, whether you agree or disagree at least he backs up his points using some data.

Our window is open, and we’re in win-now mode. There will be casualties.

I got no problem trading Knies, but it better be someone named Konecny or Meier coming back.
UPSET_GEORGE
it’s insane that so many people on here aren’t willing to trade knies for a guy of meier’s caliber.
CamThompson
It’s of course okay to trade Knies if the return is someone worth it (as others have said, Meier or Konecny come to mind).
The issue – with the Tim & Friends post and other similar articles – is that it’s framed as “the Leafs need to trade Knies” without deciding who that would be worth. It’s similar to saying they *have* to give up their first. You don’t decide on giving up the big ticket until you decide which player is worth the big ticket.
Deciding you have to give up a lot leads to overpaying. If we get a big fish like Meier or Konecny, great. But if the return is ROR I’d feel a lot less good about giving up our two big assets. And if it’s Gavrikov, fuck that.
Little_Bedroom
Imo I would trade him if the return is good. We need to win now or next year. Realistically we needed to win last year. Knies, Robertson or any other prospect is available imo
Gear4Vegito
Knies is a very, very good prospect but he is insanely overrated by most Leafs fans. He isn’t some untouchable can’t miss player.
I’m not trading him for a 1 Y rental or someone in their mid-30’s but I am absolutely moving him for someone like Timo Meier (RFA) who is just 26 or Travis Konecny (3Y @ $5.5 M) who is just 25 if that’s what it takes.
themoist
No one’s untouchable. But don’t give him up for a rental. It’s only worth it for someone proven to be effective in their role, locked in at an affordable price for this year + at least two more, in my opinion.
That said I’d rather give up 1st round picks than Knies

If you’re trading Knies it’s for Konecny that is all

No player in the world is untradeable. That idea died with the Gretzky trade. Think you’ve got a player who’s untradeable? Imagine Sakic calls you up and tells you he’ll trade you MacKinnon and Makar at 50%, plus every pick for the foreseeable future and whatever side deals are necessary to make the salaries work. You’d do it. If the player you’re think of is MacKinnon or Makar, swap out the names Sakic, MacKinnon and Makar for Holland, McDavid, and Draisaitl respectively. Knies isn’t untradeable, but he’s not someone we should let go cheaply.
MrLanks
Knies is only traded if the player coming back has term and on a bargain contract.
postmodern_lasagna
Keep in mind Amirov and Robertson are stalled in development for health reasons and not tradable as a result. Not that we should trade them per sé, but that’s two solid assets you can’t use to trade to win now or play on the team. Knies is the only prospect in this tier/higher and may be our only real bullet in the chamber when it comes to trading for anyone of consequence. If the leafs aren’t going for an elite player I’d rather them do nothing at all and just ride their depth and keep picks
james-HIMself
We don’t need a project in Knies who still needs some AHL time when we’re in win now mode
RattledRed
I really dont want to trade him… but if we do, it better be for a top 6 winger with term on a good contract. I have no clue who, or how. But if we give him up for a rental player on a retained deal, ima be the opposite of happy.
Hustler17
Not sure where that data pool came from but just off the top of my head he has almost identical stats to some guy named Tage Thompson.
Also using one of the main factors being a couple months age difference seems ridiculous. Sounds like the Laine argument.
DontToewsM3Bro
No it’s not.
Leafs need a knies type of player
BlueLuxin
When this guy comes into the team hes gonna be hated
Broton55
This is dumb. These are the players that elevate your team in the playoffs. Meanwhile all we do is look for a knies type player. He can be an impact player for years to come for us. Leafs window will remain open for years
Samurai1221
Meier or no, imo.
hexsealedfusion
Only in Toronto is the discussion about needing to trade a prospect with no information about who they would actually be trading him for.
JRocleafs
No we are not trading Knies.
If this organization has learned anything this year it should be that our young drafted players are good, developing, and ready to play.

I agree that no one is untouchable for the right trade but NHLe is a notoriously unreliable stat. Especially in the NCAA where you have a lot fewer data points, the competition level can swing wildly depending on the conference, and competition across the whole league has been increasing dramatically over the last ~20 years as it’s started to compete with major junior for prospects.
I won’t pretend I have any special insight on him. The reality is I’m sure 99% of us have barely watched more than Twitter highlights on the guy. I’ll leave that up to management.
AustichMavarlander
Of course it is, doesnt mean trade him for anyone, but this team needs to win and shouldnt have any untouchables to do it.
