After watching my kid play this year, the assists stats are really impressive considering they’re all puck hogs at that age
LoanedWolf666
Poor kid was so hated by so many hockey parents back then. He was booed and called a puck hog.
pmcdny
517 points LOL
The_Stein244
at 9, 10, and 11 years old. what a jerk!
goneballisticagain
Imagine scoring 500 points in one year… that’s the craziest thing ever
SometimesLifeIsGood
71/72 averaging 6 points per game. I am guessing they won it all
WolflordBrimley
If you want a good read, check out his NHL career wiki. It’s just a series of records and accomplishments and it just goes on and on. It’s hard to believe one person did all this
*In his first NHL season, 1979–80, Gretzky was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s Most Valuable Player (the first of eight in a row)….*
GoldenHourShower
How is there even enough time in the games to put up 517 points
quinnbeast
‘Make sure his mouth is protected.’
‘What about his nose and eyes?’
‘Pucks never hit those.’
jcdevries92
71-72 mustve have been boring right? Wouldnt it get old just potting a hat trick every game?
OlTommyBombadil
Isn’t this 10 and under?

“But he wouldn’t even be noticed in today’s game” -someone in this comment section, eventually.

What an adorable little Hannibal Lector mask.
Grand_Chief_Mathieu
At what point was the coach like: Ok Wayne, stop scoring now, we’re winning by 50.
This seems so odd.
kander12
Fun little side story to go with this that my Grandpa always told;
Gretzky Sr. was a tad nuts about Wayne and would have him on the ice every breathing minute. Wayne would play with his age group and then also play with the older teams in Brantford also (how he ends up with like 80+ gp). In Welland Ontario they hold the famous Silver Stick Tourny every year for all ages and levels of minor hockey. My grandpa was coaching the St Catharines team, age 12-13s. They were up 5-1 at the start of the 3rd against Brantford. Wayne finished playing his game with the 10-11s, got dropped off on the bench of the Brantford 12-13 year olds team for the third. He scored 4 goals and 2 assists in the third and Brantford beat my Grandpa’s team 7-6 lmao.
Hattrick_Swayze2
4.5 goals per game in that last season. What a maniac.
Seanbergs2377
Astronomical numbers there boys
GreyStoneWpg22
And how many of those age advanced as well?
Completely unreal. If that happened today his parents would need security.
JiffTheJester
Holy shit lmao
MonsterRider80
Apart from his insane stats, I also find it insane that 9–10 year olds were playing 80 games in a season… at that age, in the early 90s, I was playing maybe 40 games at most.
PalpitationOk5726
Anyone ever see the highlights of Gretzky at the world juniors, where as a teenager he was up against 20 year olds making them look like pylons.
Stonetoothed
Hannibal Lecter looking motherfucker. Ate the goalie’s liver with some orange slices and a capri sun
frankrocksjesus
4.4 goals per game average(71-72)
HayMomWatchThis
I like that they put a muzzle on the kids back then to limit biting.
beingpotential
I’d be stoked as another parent just to be there
Ballgame4
I had the pleasure of seeing him play in his prime. While every other hockey player I ever saw chased the puck, Gretzky seemed to know where the puck was going to be and knew what to do with it when it was on his stick. He also played above his age group throat his junior hockey days. Simply stated, he was the most dominant athlete I ever saw.
dropthepuck88
Would ya just look at it!
Penguin447918
I remember watching a documentary on him. He was 14 playing juniors. His defensemen got hit with the injury plague so they moved him to D. They played with 3 D, he would play about 95% of the game with the other 2 D rotating the rest of the time. He was a different animal
drbobsled
A minimum of 1759 lifetime goals with these added to the hockey DB totals.
The 72-73 to 74-75 stats are missing. As well as Canada Cup, World Championships, and Olympics from Hockey DB.
I wonder if he broke 2000 lifetime goals
shanster925
Pretty good, I guess.
ratzy88
Hespeler is like 20 mins from me and Brantford is 20 mins from me. Suffice to he is literally the only good thing deform Brantford
Spacepickle89
4+ G/G… those poor kids!
Mfed23
He got more points in a season than my whole “career”
Sufficient-Cookie404
517 Points in one season has me dying of laughter, like the other parents must have **hated** him!
swagginburner
How did he have this many games at this level of hockey.
No_Good2934
Jesus over 500 points in 85 games…
Adventurous-Peak132
4.4 goals per game. Holy fucking shit man
Tallaslions_
85 games in a season?! His poor parents taking him to that many hockey games.
parksfried
85 game season? For an 11 yo?

Is Wayner the GOAT of the GOATs?
By that, I mean is he the most obvious GOAT in sports? There’s debates, for example, in the NBA where you can make serious arguments for Jordan, Wilt, Kareem, Lebron, Steph and loads more. In soccer, all modern fans will say Messi but you also can argue with Pele, Maradona, etc.
The only other sports I can think of is football where Tom Brady is the obvious GOAT. Maybe Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt but I do feel like those records are more breakable vs Tom Brady’s 7 championships.
Gretzky, on the other hand, his stats are so absurd and have stood against “generational player” after “generational player”. There is no reasonable argument for any other player in hockey history. Lemieux is the closest in talent but falls so far short in longevity. Howe exceeds Gretzky’s longevity but no chance he was a better player than Gretzky at any point. We might see Ovie break his goals record but no one is getting close to 2,857 points.
Is Wayne the GOATest?
kmay77
That’s nothing- Should have seen my street hockey stats from 93’.
puls3r
I know he must have been good but who plays 60+ games/season in Atom?
mausfanger
Disappointing. He essentially doubled his goal totals each year, but his assists plateaued that third year.
scandrews187
Wayne Gretzky understood the concept of team hockey better and at an earlier age than anyone in history. He made everyone around him better by using those people to their strengths during the flow of play. He had that much influence when he was on the ice. It was his. He made the other four guys on the ice look like Hall of Famers regularly whether they were or not. Bernie Nicholls, among others, owes him at least a few beers
franksredhot8791
Is this accurate? 85 games played in one season for atom team? More than an NHL team. I’m sceptical.
jreddi7
I cannot imagine playing 60-85 games a season at that age.
