[Jason Moser] The Sabres do not need Timo Meier to make the playoffs. They’re tracking to do so as is (52% chance per PuckLuck.com). Here’s what he WOULD bring to the team:

I want Meier because he is a style of player that I think the sabres are missing. From what little I’ve seen, he seems to be similar to what mitts was supposed to be.

I DONT want Meier because of where we would need to put him. I’m afraid of knocking JJP down to the 3rd line. You’d assume oloffson would be part of the return for this trade (which I am Ok with).

By getting Meier, we definitely are headed towards the style of hockey called “if we score 10 goals a game, we don’t need to get more defensive depth”. I don’t know if this works or not. I would still rather pick up a depth defenseman.

  2. All I want is a top 4 defensemen. Please and thanks

52% chance isn’t that great. If he adds 20% to the chances that’s significant.

  4. I have a hard time seeing Meier as a legitimate target for us, specifically because of his qualifying offer.

I don’t think we go all the way this year, even if we do get in the playoffs. Investing anything substantial in a rental isn’t wise in that scenario, so the only way he makes sense is if we can sign him for a few years at a reasonable rate.

If we can sign him for a reasonable rate and time frame, and without compromisng our future, he might be worth trading for. But I doubt that’s a viable option.

Since we’re talking Meier here, I want to hear some people’s gives.

    1) Your best offer for Meier with no extension in place.

2a)Your offer for Meier with an extension in place.

2b) The value and term of that extension.
