  1. One thing I might have mentioned also is how well Alex Newhook has been coming along lately. That third line with him, O'Conner, and Cogliano has actually been the most productive the last few games. I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually becomes the long term answer for 2C…

  2. Avs getting someone and lando back makes me smile
Makar is such a difference maker(😂) and imagine the extra ltir spent on (?) add two upper middle six guys

  3. Saw a graphic showing the Avs have the most games against rested teams and also the least against tired teams (referring to back-to-backs) so considering their injuries and that, impressive where they are. Bednar really needs a Jack Adams nominee

  4. If Byram and Manson can return and stay healthy, that will make a big difference going into the playoffs. I’m concerned the healthy D Toews Makar Johnson and Girard might be wearing down. Hunt has played well in their absence.

  5. I mean Kuemper did get stabbed in the eye by a stick in Round 1 of the playoffs, so we really don’t even know how well he might have played had he not been partially blinded. No one will convince me he was 100% in the Final against Tampa.

I love our current goalie tandem! And I’m so impressed and proud of Mikko for stepping up and carrying this team when he was the only actual top 6 forward in the lineup. Mikko has been dinged by Colorado fans in the past (and rightly so) for relying too much on Nate, and playing a little sloppily and maybe not at his full potential. But, when he was forced to take the lead, he did it! Now I’m probably going to spend the next few years worrying about his contract extension because I don’t want to lose him. But man – Mikko really does deserve Hart consideration. Without him the Avs would be pretty securely out of playoff contention and unlikely they could fight their way back into it. Mikko has been the very definition of a Most Valuable Player for the Avalanche this season.

I miss Landy, though, and really hope he makes it back for a few games this season. He’s a HUGE part of this team, on and off ice. And my favorite player – so it’s been too long for me since I’ve seen him play.

  6. Agreed….Colorado is a good pick for cup hopefull's this season. Injuries aside, still lots of depth on all 4 lines.

  7. Boston fans aren't gonna like hearing the prediction about the Avs repeating, particularly after the Bruins crushed our minor league team in the two meetings this year. But it's not out of the question, and a final between the two would be epic. As an Avs fan, I'd certainly like to see it.

  8. I'd say a bonus is how many games they have against bad teams left, but their record against bad teams is not great. Lots of SJ, Anaheim, Phoenix in the back end of the season.
Also Mikko is getting no love from the Athletic for Hart.

  9. Yeah idk how you could make an argument for anyone but mikko for mvp at this point

  10. I disagree with you saying Georgiev has emerged as a clear starter, they have shown that they work best when they are co-starters. They both play at a similar solid level when healthy. Georgiev has tons of promise, but when Francouz was out, Georgiev didn't seem like he could handle the load by himself, and with Francouz you just can't trust him to stay healthy for an entire season(but he seems to always come through in big moments). Avs really need them both.

And everyone always seems to discredit Kuemper for his playoff performance last year, but besides forgetting that he a stick go right in his eye they also overlook the offensive power of the teams they faced. Nashville had 2 top-ten goal scorers plus Josi who almost broke 100pts as a defensemen, Blues scored just 1 point less than the Avalanche in the regular season, Oilers had players scoring at a historical rate, and Lightning aren't slouches themselves either.

  11. Hopefully they will get Byram and Manson right after the all star break. Then when Landy gets back their power will be fully operational.

  12. Great review as always, only thing I have to say is that Englund has definitely not played well this season. He's an AHL call-up type player at best and part of the reason Colorado isn't doing so well is because they have to rely on players like him and Hunt/McDermid when they really shouldn't have to

  13. I still think Kuempers numbers last year are misleading, teams that don't give up many shots tend to have a goalie with a mediocre save pct. All it takes is 2 random good chances to sneak in and if you only face 17 shots your pct. Is under .900 even tho you played great. As Gretzky said it's all about when the saves are made and Kuemper locked it down every single time they needed it. I am love georgie though, he's carried us early

  14. The Horvat bit didn't age too well, lol. Overall a great report, I'd have to say. As an Avs fan I'm not mad that Shannon has a soft spot for the organization.
In related news, getting more and more nervous about Landy not coming back in shape to play to his potential. Knee injuries are rough; I've had 4 of them and thank god I'm still able to run in my 40s, lol.

  15. THIS IS NOW OBSOLETE. DO IT AGAIN. But seriously, this was great thank you.

  16. the only reason makar has been "slow by his standard (and i agree, not throwing shade)" is because he has had to play 25+ minutes a night because the avs second pair (and others) have been gone basically all year.. and he still has 45 points lmao, he is unbelievable.

  17. The moose scored nearly every single goal for the avs during a few weeks in december when he was basically the only top 6 forward that was left healthy on the team. The only reason they didn't absolutely crash and burn in December is because of Rantanen putting up the points and Georgie keeping them from needing him to put up even more. But Rantanen is easily the MVP because eventually they rode him too hard and his performance started suffering, and that's when they got into that bad losing streak. But now the ship is righting itself, and as long as there are no more long term injuries most of the team minus Landeskog and Helm should be back after the all star break.

Edit: ahaha, I see you pre-recorded this one Shannon! If the Avs are gonna get Horvat at the deadline it certainly won't be from Vancouver ;P

  18. The NHL would be really smart to try and get shopping links on this guys page. I want to buy these threads! So sick!

  19. The moose definitely deserves the heart trophy. Dude is so much fucking fun to watch. The avs better never let the moose get loose on a different team.

  20. Valeri Nichushkin is the most valuable player on the Avs. The record with and without him are pretty crazy.

  21. The Avs are one team I'm not worried about making the playoffs (I'd say 95%). Post Cup and nursing injuries, they were bound to need some time to get all cylinders firing again. Down the stretch, I see them returning to the Juggernaught that they were last season. That said, they lost quite a bit of depth in the offseason due to the Cap, and it'll be interesting to see if they will replace it by the trade deadline in order to go on another run.

  22. This was posted 5 hours ago. They would not need to pay Vancouver for Horvat. He was traded two days ago, and THG made a video about it. They'd have to pay the Islanders.

  23. This is a behemoth team that can go 16-4 against the best teams with mediocre but fairly clutch goaltending. The loss of Naz can be absorbed. Newhook and Erod still have a half season to round into 2c form, and are showing well. Goaltending has been awesome, Moose has been awesome. But after losing kads, the kind of player he is, that means they can't be without both Landeskog all season, and also Nuke for large chunks of time. That's a lot of gumption, skill and speed gone, a tonne of possession, guys to give mack some more room and puck. Don't know about Makar this year for the Norris, seems a bit out of sync at times, I think next year Norris and another great playoffs this year though. Still my cup favorite too, but Nuke and Landy can't miss much time after February if that's going to happen. Can't go in out of sync and expect to play that fast and aggressive game well.
