Comparing Ovi to Crosby is like trying to compare apples to oranges and then saying the oranges suck cause they’re not red. Ovi is the better goal scorer and “Star” player. Crosby is the better all around player, if not the best all around player in the league. There’s no point in comparing them or trying to say one is worse than the other because you can’t. They’re just playing different styles of hockey. Crosby likes the team leader role. Ovi is just a pure goal scorer/big hitter.
the rivalry was put to bed around the Golden Goal. for how many years were the Capitols finishing first in the league then getting dumped in the first/second round of the playoffs while the Pens were making it second+ round. I think if we look back we will see the Pens have usually lasted longer in the playoffs then the Caps, Team Canada has out played Team Russia, etc. the rivalry is dead cause its hard to say who's the best when Crosby regularly finishes better. Ovie could get the scoring title from Gretzky and it still wont put him in the top 50 all time, meanwhile Crosby is already there.
one of the reasons this rivalry works is cause their in the same division. gretz and mario, different divisions/ different conferences. mcdavid and matthews, they only play each other like twice a season and would only meet in the scf. edmonton would have to go through vegas, colorado and some other team. toronto would have to play boston, tampa, probably carolina. i just dont see it, pretty much the same reason as gretz and mario. someone else said it too that mcdavid is also just so far ahead of the rest of the league

in some idea, there wont be a blank vs blank like Crosby VS Ovechkin until we get 2 super stars, faces of the franchises or even the league in the same division. they play against each other more and will end up having a bigger disliking towards each other. Look at the 1996-2002 rivalry between Steve Yzerman's Red Wings and Joe Sakic's Avs, they where both super good, feisty and wanted to win, and genuially hated each other. It was so good because they played each other so much but also because of the hit on Draper and it all goes out from there. If you ever want a rivaly like this ever again, you need to teams in the same division or conference that want to win and two players around the same gernial age who also want to win over anything. Because hopefully both of them are good teams so it makes the idea even better. They play more games aginst each other and lets hope that they see each other in the playoffs.

As a huge caps fan, I love the rivalry but I also love that they have become such good friends over the years. Ovi said in an interview this weekend that they keep in touch and always call each other when one reaches a big milestone and it just made me so happy
Grew up in Pittsburgh and was lucky to have an aunt that loved hockey so I got to see Lemieux play as a little kid. When he took over and got Crosby we all dreamed of what could be but damn did he exceed all expectations. I’m glad that the pens played the caps in all 3 of our last cups. What a pair of legends

I from Eastern Europe, and I never not saw on hockey like on rivalry between players, maybe because I not american? Penguins vs Capitals always be very rivalry series from Mario Lemieux era. I understand that you want to see this play-off series again, it important for you because it nostalgia from childhood, and I very respect this feelings. But, dude, better not waiting this too much, because if it will not happening it will disappointing you. I prefer them to be friends and not enemies. They play great together. They are the goats hands down.
The first game they faced off this year on TNT was amazing hockey. Ovi was lighting everyone’s ass up.
And them two somewhat teaming up instead of a bad blood rivalry is just appreciating one another and the love for the game. A prime example of how humans mature & treat others as we grow older.

I think mcdavid vs Bedard would be an amazing rivalry if they were closer in age and Bedard gets drafted in the pacific. But being almost 8 years apart it will never be like crosby ovi drafted in back to back years. Mcdavid will be in his 30s when Bedard gets to his prime.
Yeah nothing will happen like this for a very long time. Two generational talents that had the same rookie year and duked it out for there whole careers. It’s something special.
