The Washington Capitals re-sign Dylan Strome to a 5-year deal. How Does this help the Caps?

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about Dylan Strome’s new 5-year deal with the Caps.

The Washington Capitals have re-signed center Dylan Strome to a five-year contract extension, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Strome’s contract will carry an average annual value of $5.0 million.

“Dylan is an intelligent and skilled center and has been a great addition to our organization,” said MacLellan. “We are pleased to sign him to a long-term contract. We feel his skill set is a great fit for our team as he enters the prime years of his career at an important position.”

Strome, 25, has recorded 36 points (11g, 25a) in 52 games with Washington this season. The 6’3″, 200-pound forward ranks second on the Capitals in assists, third in points and power-play points (14) and fourth in goals. Strome, who also ranks fourth among Capitals forwards in time on ice per game (16:42), is on pace to record 56 points this season.

  1. I was really hoping they would sign him to a longer deal! Now I hope Gus gets picked up too

  2. Agree with you Dan, very noice! he's part of the Caps future for sure!

  3. Like the deal. Buys out his prime years and adds a piece on the younger side long-term. Will be very interesting to see what they do about their defensemen next. Even before the Strome extension, they couldn't afford extensions for all of Orlov, Jensen and Gustafsson.

Even if they promote all of Protas, CMM, Alexeyev and Lapierre to full-time NHL duties next season and resign the aforementioned trio at D, they'll still be an estimated 2-4 million over the cap, fielding no spare forward or defensemen with all of Eller, Hagelin, Sheary, Hathaway, Brown, TVR, Mojo, Irwin and Aube-Kubel gone.

Not to be the armchair GM here, but with how great Gustafsson has looked on the powerplay and knowing how well that Orlov-Jensen pairing jells together, I'd say there's a good case to be made for trading Carlson this off-season. Younger teams like Ottawa, Buffalo, New Jersey and Los Angeles are basically one major D-piece away. They should all come calling if Carlson was to be made available.
