Sonny Milano (22 points 40 games since being called up) given 3 year extension. Anyone have insight on why he failed here and then Anaheim but could turn it around for the Caps?
Sonny Milano (22 points 40 games since being called up) given 3 year extension. Anyone have insight on why he failed here and then Anaheim but could turn it around for the Caps?
IDK enough to get into systems and the specific coaches’ personalities but that can always play a part.
Also, he is only 26 and the NHL is made up of the best players in the world so sometimes it takes guys a little longer to put it together and be competitive in the league.
Little different scenarios but Justin Danforth didn’t make an NHL roster until 28 years old and Tage Thompson is breaking out as a star this year at age 25.

Some of it might be mental, too. Maybe he’s been humbled a bit through those two previous failures and is listening to coaches in a way he didn’t before. He was quite an arrogant kid here.

If he manages to maintain this level of production, I’m guessing getting cut from his PTO was a wakeup call like getting claimed in the expansion draft was for Wild Bill and caused him to double down on training, etc.
but he started off strong in Anaheim too before falling straight off a cliff, so I’m really curious to see whether he can maintain that sort of production going forward or not.

He also was cut from a PTO for the flames. Sometimes a wake up call is needed that hes not gonna be in the league much longer

My read on him when he was here was he was a bit of a dummy. Not just poor decisions on ice, just like a bit vacant during interviews and such. Needed extra time to parse conversations correctly.
I could be totally wrong on that, just my read on it.
But, I think the reason was simply his game didn’t jive with Torts. Torts knew he could play better and adhere to the systems in place more stringently, so he would get sat or sent down in the hopes of his effort being stepped up, but it didn’t happen.
Maybe Sonny was playing the long game and didn’t want to be here and handled it immaturely? But we were winning at the time, so I dunno, if he was doesn’t make much sense.

Listening to Puck Soup they made it sound like the contract is team friendly. And a $1.9m cap hit for a guy that can score 15 goals a year is not a huge risk.

He’s also know too have a massive ego and a really strong personality. Sometimes you need certain people to cut even the thickest of personalities down to get their point across on what needs done and how to fix their issues. It’s more emotional development than physical

He is a really idiosyncratic type of player. He possesses the level of manipulation, vision and creativity to legitimately crack defenses open. Very few players can often create time and space while having the skill to take advantage of it. Unfortunately he didn’t have the rest of hockey and he didn’t get enough playing time to legitimately get better here.
I don’t know that he’s really turned it around for the Caps in any major way. He’s scoring at a similar rate per 60 at even strength (2.0p/60 in 101 games with Jackets, 1.7 p/60 in 66 games in Anaheim, 2.2 p/60 in 40 games in Washington), but it’s likely that he’s refined his style and found gradually more success over time and/or found a coach/system that gives him consistent playing time. Or maybe he’s just having a 40 game streak and hasn’t floundered yet.

Because he’s talented on offense, (given a babied role), and wasn’t good on defense. Because of that, he would get out on the lower lines, but that’s waste as well. So we moved on from him.
This is such a hindsight question. It’s like asking why Duclair didn’t work out for the 5 teams he was on before Florida. Or why Galchenyuk looked so promising once but cant even maintain a PTO. Because player development isn’t as easy as fans think.

This contract will look bad by 2024 season. Small sample size to give that contract when the track record before has been poor and his character isn’t stellar

I’m mean he’s having a good season, but I would hesitate to say he turned it around. He’s been inconsistent and I think the caps will regret the term, but with that low of a salary it’s probably not a big deal.
I hope he has turned it around, but his main issues are inconsistency, attitude, and lack of effort. We will see how it goes
