The Future is Bright but the Present is Murky for the Minnesota Wild

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we react to The Athletic naming the Minnesota Wild prospect pool the best in the NHL. We look at how their recent picks are doing, and how Judd Brackett has managed to find quality players without the luxury of top picks. We then attempt to answer why despite current struggles at the NHL level we haven’t seen any of those prospects get a call to help the current roster. We discuss the job Bill Guerin has in front of him, with a struggling team, and why evaluating the current roster to see who is a fit beyond this year is the most important part of the season right now. We also discuss whether or not Dean Evason is currently up for evaluation himself. All in All, before Bill Guerin can add future prospects to the mix, he has to find out what works and what doesn’t at the NHL level.

  1. Tough loss last night against a beatable team.
Until they address ZERO secondary scoring we get what we got.
As I stated prior, shuffling lines @ this point is square peg round hole. The lineup needs some different players. Teams ramp up their play for playoffs after All Star weekend so this thing could go south real quick if they continue to lose in regulation. Someone tell Gorg an absolute LogJam of bottom 6 non-scoring forwards isn't "depth".
Enjoy the game 2nite, fella 🍻

  2. My thoughts on todays show.
To start Everson has to go. he's not good
    With rookies specifically Rossi Walker
His refusal to put Dewar up says it all
    As you mentioned
    His line combinations are terrible
Boy did Hartman look good last nite
    And steel was tremendous
    Are you kidding me?
When the fans stop coming maybe
    Will get the changes needed
That I and several members have talked about, the line up should be as follows
    Kaprisov Dewar Zuggs
    Boldy Rossi Walker
    Foligno erikson.ek Duhaim
    Shaw Gudreau Beckman
Reeves should only play against heavy teams
    On defense
    Spergon Middleton
    Brodin. Gosky
    Addison Merrill
With Faber coming in after Minnesota wins the National Championship
With just a couple of tweaks this team
    Will be dangerous
I would seriously look at hiring
    Andrew Burnett
    He's a very good coach
As I called it the last two games
    And any game moving forward
The Wild are easy picking for any team
    Until changes are made
And that's my two sense for today

  3. Agreed Seth, although a VERY rocky start Wallstedt is killing it. Walker is a YUGE surprise as he was just OK for the Gophs and never really progressed in College.

  4. Just waiting for the trade deadline so we can get a sense of this team’s direction. It’s frustrating bc this team does have a route to success and just failed to consistently play it with the middle six being shockingly ineffective on offense. In this league you need to either be at the top competing for the cup or at the bottom getting access to the best assets for a rebuild, being stuck in the middle is the worst place you can be. Judd’s talent evaluation has been great for where the Wild usually draft and they probably have the deepest farm in the league, but it remains to be seen that they have as many top end talents as the teams that are picking at the top of drafts. If the Wild aren’t going to turn it around with the current roster then I’d like to see some addition by subtraction, get rid of the players that do nothing and give the prospects a shot. No expectations just whatever happens, happens.

  5. Sounds like Guerin hopes, per the Athletic, guys that can't and will never be able to score goals will start scoring goals.
    😆

  6. Watching Dumba last night was brutal and Addison wasn't any better. Watching Addison give the Stars a 2-on-1 breakaway and getting pushed around by Hakanpaa in front of the net are reasons why I'm not a big fan of him. With Spurgeon and Brodin locked up for the next 4/5 years, I don't see him making the top 4 anytime soon especially since he's not a shot blocker like either of them. Faber would have to really suck defensively for him to not be Brodin's next partner.

  7. Real quick observation on last nights game. Why, because Dallas had 3 penalties is it an unwritten rule that the Wild have to be careful and the next penalty is going to be called on the Wild. Call the game – period. Benn should have had a penalty for holding Hartman down and tearing off his helmet. The Dallas crowd basically pouted and the refs obliged. Guerin is treating these next 3 weeks as an audition. He already knows what the needs are, just needs to see what becomes available closer to the deadline. Hockey is the weirdest game as all the teams are an within an eyelash competition wise. Add the right piece, get the second wildcard spot and your chances are as good as 1/2 the teams without home ice in R1. As I send this, Tarasenko goes to the Rangers along with D Niko Mikkola for Sammy Blais, Hunter Skinner a 1st rounder and a 4th. So, it looks the the Blues have constructed their 2023 plan. Need secondary scoring or it going to be over sooner than later. 17, how many point blank shots can he not score on? Lastly, GM needs consistency, Greenway flashes in and out even in the same game – last night was a classic example. That will be a quick way out of dodge….

  8. Billy just did a call in with skor north
And said there's no room for Rossi
Walker I bet he finds room when the Wild lose ten in a row

  9. although I hate blaming coach and not management. great drafts and moves Guerin et al set us up beautifully for post buyout Era. with Fleury and Reaves "culture" change Guerin wanted makes ya wonder what's wrong 🤔

I'd rather buckle up being a seller and reap the benefits of a beauty prospect core in the next 3 years. hoping the team (Hartman, Steel, Greenway, Dumba etc.) and coaching looks WAYYY different come 2 seasons from now. Get Boldy, Kaprizov, and Ekker some playoff help!
