I'm just not convinced having Karlsson and McDavid on the same team will work. Both of these superstars drive the play and always need to have the puck. How will this work? There's this problem of managing the cap going forward. If the Sharks retain 50% maybe it could work. San Jose has a bigger problem as it has 49/50 contracts meaning they would have to make other trades to make room for the multi-player haul from Edmonton to fit into their roster! At this point, this deal with all of its hurdles seems more and more like a pipe dream!
As much as I love Edmonton, I think I'd rather see Karlsson go to Toronto and get rid of Holl. If they don't get their D in order, they won't have a chance against Boston OR Tampa… There are way too many turnovers from the defense lately.

Mike Grier has a soft spot for Edmonton, and his mission is to recruit young talent i.e. draft picks and prospects, and clear cap space. There's 100% no doubt Grier wants to do the deal because Edmonton has everything Grier needs… picks, movable roster assets and top prospects.

I have no idea how you make it work… but fuck it would be cool. The hardest part isn't even Karlsson's value as a player, it's trying to get 4 more years of retention out of Sharks and possibly another team if need be. You would assume Puljujarvi, Bourgault, Schaefer, Petrov, the next few years of picks, and possibly Bouchard would all be on the table to make the deal work.
Edit: also Habs fans have been going wild on every social media post trying to sell Edmundson for a 1st to any team that has an arena. He's barely even an upgrade on most bottom feeders, people asking for a 1st for a low upside player with the potential to bomb out of the league before his contract is over is nuts. You picked up his rights for a 5th round pick, expecting even a 2nd is reaching. If you really value him so highly you can keep him.
I don't know why Edmonton would do this. Upgrade defense yes but Karlsson is more like 4 attacker so they going to bleed even more than now

This makes sense for both teams as the Oil have to win now and this maybe the only window of opportunity to get rid of the Karlsson contract. If both teams are realistic it could happen but managers are starting to figure out in a flat cap era they need draft picks as they are even more valuable because the entry level deals are so affordable. Both teams really need to get this done. Three first round picks are not a bad deal if you win the cup in the next 3-4 years. You have to be aggressive sometimes to get your team over the top. The oil have three more attempts to win the cup so they had better get this deal done. After that Dry and Mc are going to break the bank again and they will be out of cap space again for many more years to come.

Edmonton doesnt need help scoring goals they need help preventing them, karlson is a good defenceman but what edmonton really needs is a goalie.
